The AFL has issued a statement confirming the suspension of Sydney Swans AFLW players Alexia Hamilton and Paige Sheppard for two AFLW matches due to conduct unbecoming.

The incident in question occurred in December 2023 when the pair were charged by police for possession of an illicit substance outside a hotel in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. They have since appeared in court and received a reprimand.

The Sydney Swans promptly notified the AFL Integrity Unit (AFLIU) upon learning of the matter. Following their court appearances, the AFLIU conducted interviews with both players, during which they admitted to possession of the illicit substance.

The AFL determined that Hamilton and Sheppard breached AFL Rule 2.3(a), which prohibits conduct unbecoming or likely to prejudice the interests or reputation of the AFL or bring the game of football into disrepute.

It’s important to note that AFLW players are not currently governed by the AFL’s Illicit Drug Policy framework. Therefore, no notifiable adverse finding will be registered against either player under that policy. Additionally, both players have not tested positive for any prohibited substances under the Australian Football Anti-Doping Code.

Stephen Meade, AFL General Counsel, emphasized the importance of players’ responsibility to uphold community expectations and the ongoing review of the AFL’s Illicit Drug Policy, in collaboration with the AFLPA. The expectation is that AFLW players will be included in any future policy developments.

While Hamilton and Sheppard have expressed remorse and apologized for their actions, they are accountable for upholding professional standards, and their suspension reflects the seriousness with which such conduct is regarded within the AFL community.
