The Gold Coast SUNS have announced Rhyce Shaw as the new head coach of their AFLW team, signing him to a four-year contract. Shaw, who has been part of the club since 2021, will continue his role as Director of Coaching within the StreetSmarts SUNS Academy alongside his new responsibilities.

Shaw’s extensive coaching experience includes assistant coaching roles with Sydney and North Melbourne, as well as serving as the Kangaroos’ Senior Coach in 2019. At the SUNS, he has worked as Head of Development in the AFL program and has played a key role in nurturing talent through the academy.

Shaw expressed enthusiasm about returning to coaching, highlighting his belief in the team’s potential. “I’m honored to coach this team and excited by how far we can go. We’ve added high-quality talent through the Academy, and our experienced players are ready to take the next step,” Shaw said. “There’s no limit to what we can achieve, and I welcome the challenge ahead.”

Gold Coast SUNS CEO Mark Evans emphasized Shaw’s suitability for the role. “Rhyce was the standout candidate, with his extensive coaching background and dedication to player development. His work with the club has shown his ability to elevate talent and align with our vision of achieving AFLW Premiership success.”

Shaw is set to begin his new role in May, with the AFLW pre-season starting on May 19 and the 2025 season kicking off in August.
