Port Adelaide forward Willie Rioli has been suspended for one match by the AFL following multiple incidents involving threats made toward opposing players.

The decision comes after a series of events that began with a post-match message directed at Western Bulldogs defender Bailey Dale. After a heated Round 8 clash, Rioli sent a private message warning that Dale should be cautious when visiting Darwin for an upcoming game. The message implied that Rioli had friends in the Northern Territory who could pose a threat.

Rioli later apologized, and both clubs initially considered the matter resolved without further action. However, new information came to light in recent days indicating that Rioli had previously made similar threats to other players in separate incidents. These earlier events had not been reported to the league at the time.

Upon learning of these additional cases, the AFL reopened its investigation. After discussions with all clubs and players involved and admissions by Rioli, the league concluded there was a concerning pattern of behavior.

As a result, the AFL imposed a one-match suspension, ruling Rioli out of Port Adelaide’s Round 9 match against the Adelaide Crows. He will also be required to complete education focusing on respectful and non-violent conduct. The league stated it will continue to provide wellbeing support to the player.

Rioli has acknowledged his actions as unacceptable and has taken a temporary leave from football to focus on his behavior. He expressed remorse and appreciation for the support from his club.

The AFL reiterated that all clubs must promptly report on-field or off-field incidents. The league emphasized that mutual respect and sportsmanship are fundamental to the game, and inappropriate behavior—regardless of context—will not be tolerated.
