The Melbourne Football Club has sensationally parted ways with premiership-winning coach Simon Goodwin, ending an era marked by both historic success and lingering controversy.
Goodwin, who guided the Demons to their first AFL flag in 57 years in 2021, was dismissed with one year still remaining on his contract. The club cited a need for fresh leadership after a sharp decline in performance, despite a dominant recent win over West Coast.
The decision comes in the wake of a disastrous 2025 campaign that saw Melbourne slump to 14th on the ladder. The season began with a five-game losing streak and was punctuated by a humiliating collapse against St Kilda, where a 46-point three-quarter-time lead was squandered, ending in a loss after a costly 6-6-6 formation breach in the dying seconds.
While Goodwin’s tactical nous and 2021 triumph are still celebrated, the Demons’ inability to win a single finals match since that flag cast a shadow over his tenure. The club’s board, while acknowledging the “ruthlessness” of the call, said it was time for a change to revitalise the playing group.
Adding to the turmoil were long-running off-field controversies. Allegations of misconduct, including claims of bullying, public gambling, and substance use, had swirled around Goodwin for several years. Though consistently denied by the club and unproven, the scrutiny persisted, exacerbated by internal tensions and past boardroom battles.
The situation became so strained that WorkSafe Victoria launched an investigation into the club’s workplace culture. While Melbourne labelled these matters as “historical,” they nonetheless contributed to the pressure on Goodwin’s leadership.
In a final twist, Goodwin declined the opportunity to coach out the remainder of the season, reportedly walking away immediately. Assistant coach Troy Chaplin has been appointed caretaker for the rest of 2025.
With a premiership on his résumé and no shortage of coaching pedigree, Goodwin is expected to attract interest from other clubs. However, his exit marks the end of a dramatic chapter for the Melbourne Demons. One that delivered ultimate glory but finished in disappointment and division.
