The AFL is back, and despite being under strange circumstances, it’s great to finally have footy back nonetheless!
Goals are the key winning games and everyone loves a snag, none more than these guys though.
Here is a look at the five contenders primed to make a run at one of the key coveted individual awards – the Coleman Medal.
Jeremy Cameron (GWS)
The reigning Coleman Medallist looks ready to go for a second straight medal after a fantastic 2019 season which saw him snag 67 goals on the season. Cameron looked like narrowly missing out on the award in 2019, but an amazing nine-goal effort in the last round of the season pinched it for the star Giants forward for his first Coleman Medal. Boasting a powerful nature, agile around the ground, a great set of hands and an accurate kick for goal, Cameron is a handful for any key defender that tries to stop him in his tracks and with the rate and speed of ball movement the Giants play with, Cameron is bound to get plenty of chances in 2020 to go for a Coleman Medal double.
Ben Brown (North Melbourne)
Brown was just one amazing Jeremy Cameron round away from winning his first ever Coleman Medal in 2019 after a brilliant year which saw him snag 64 goals for the season. Brown isn’t one of those names that always comes first to the mind when thinking about superstar forwards, but he is genuine. Long, tall and surprisingly athletic for his height and stature mixed with deadly accuracy from the set shot (and his infamous huge run up), Brown is a trouble for any defender and has the ability to kick multiple goals in a hurry, giving him another genuine chance at a Coleman Medal in 2020.
Tom Lynch (Richmond)
Lynch is one of the most athletic tall forwards in the AFL that has the capability to turn a game on its head on his day. Lynch kicked 54 goals in 2019 and playing in one of the most attacking a high scoring teams in the league, has every chance to top that tally and heavily contend again for the Coleman Medal in 2020. Tall, athletic, a strong set of hands and one of the most accurate kicks in the league, Lynch poses so many issues when the ball is in his vicinity and is a major threat to take out the Coleman in 2020, especially if he gets going early. Josh Kennedy (West Coast)
Kennedy is one of the star forwards of the competition and is always a threat around goal. And that gives him every chance to take out a third Coleman Medal in 2020. Injuries and father time have slowed Kennedy down over the last couple of seasons, but this could be the year he gets back on track, especially if he has a healthy midfield delivering the ball down his throat every chance like they’re capable of. Strong in the air and very accurate in front of goal, Kennedy is a handful and is always a threat to take out the Coleman, and 2020 is no exception.
Tom Hawkins (Geelong)
Last on the list is the ‘Tomahawk’, Tom Hawkins. When talking about the Coleman Medal, Hawkins is a name that should pop into the head and for good reason. Hawkins is one of the most powerful forwards in the game that has the football smarts around the ground to be a major threat in front of goal. Hawkins kicked 52 goals in 2019 and is capable of bettering that, especially with the players he has up the ground delivering the ball to him on a silver platter. Strong in the contest mixed with a big and accurate kick for goal gives Hawkins every opportunity to kick a bag and contend for the Coleman in 2020.
