Toby Greene will lead the GIANTS into the 2023 AFL season as their new captain. The 29-year-old has been with the club since the start and is considered one of their most decorated players. Greene was appointed co-captain alongside Stephen Coniglio and Josh Kelly ahead of the 2022 season and will now take the reins as the sole captain for 2023, with Coniglio and Kelly serving as vice-captains.
Greene expressed his excitement and honour at being named captain of the club he joined as an 18-year-old. He credited his leadership skills to the time and effort he has put into developing himself, and acknowledged the support he will receive from Coniglio and Kelly.
A new-look leadership group will support Greene, with Tom Green, Harry Perryman, Sam Taylor, and Connor Idun joining the group for the first time. Brent Daniels, Harry Himmelberg, Lachie Ash, and Isaac Cumming have been named in an emerging leaders’ group who will work closely with former co-captains Phil Davis and Callan Ward.
According to GIANTS General Manager of Football, Jason McCartney, the appointment of Greene as captain followed a comprehensive process that resulted in the one-captain model. McCartney praised Greene’s contributions to the club as a player and a leader and expressed excitement about the new leadership group, which includes a range of skills, experiences, and attributes.
The GIANTS will begin their 2023 campaign under new coach Adam Kingsley on March 19 against the Adelaide Crows at GIANTS Stadium.
