Yep, pretty much a summation of what's been said here forever...

Tom Rockliff: How Port Adelaide can turn its season around

Former Port Adelaide midfielder Tom Rockliff lays down the gauntlet on the Power’s 0-2 start and explains how they can bounce back.

Port Adelaide has a big problem.

Not in defence, but in attack. They are struggling to score.
In short, the Power are currently lacking forward craft and seems devoid of any attacking structure.

I know it’s easy to say no Charlie Dixon, no Port Adelaide but they need to find other ways to score. And at the moment, they don’t have many.

If they can’t find a way to fix this, they won’t be able to achieve the ultimate that they desire. It has to be concerning for them.

It is still Round 2, but this has to be a headache for the club.

Rocky gives more analysis and answers in one article than Hinkley has given in 10* years.

Wow, I wish I could get paid for being captain obvious.
Probably should have done more with your life, tan a little harder or had a bit more ability. Unfortunately we that didn’t are relegated to sharing our thoughts and opinions between good blokes, and women, on here.

I'll put this in this thread, but I don't know if the article is right or not because I only watch with the mute button on...

This is a lot like the famous Geoff Lemon article in the Guardian in 2015 attacking the 9 cricket commentary team and production, and how it had got so bad, it was destroying its famous legacy.

Bennett and Nicholson have been big improvements on 7's coverage, but there are still a lot of dross.

Lemon decided to do something about it, started a guerilla cricket commentary site - White Line Wireless - calling games off the TV on the internet, was joined by Adam Collins, they bought the radio rights to Pak v Oz in UAE late 2018, 6 months after the Sandpaper series in SAF, set up the Final Word Podcast and now with Collins are major writers and commentators on cricket and SEN's main cricket commentators.

He said he was expecting massive blow back from 9's producers and commentators and fans, but got very little and put it down to everyone knowing 9's time was up and had lost its way.

Maybe the same has happened and will keep happening with change at 7.

Lemon, explains the whole situation in this podcast with Jarrod Kimber. Kimber is an ex cricket analytics guy, who has worked around cricket teams, been manager, the analytics guy, general dog's body, but then moved into cricket writing - blogs, magazines, Cricinfo, books etc, has worked on ABC radio's cricket coverage, cricket doco making, podcasts and you tube analysis of the game using his analytics skills and databases. He did that great video on Neil Wagner I put up in the cricket thread around Christmas time.

They look at the demise of 9 in a lot more depth than Lemon's original Guardian article.

If you can't find the time to listen to whole 50 minutes, listen to the last 6 minutes from 43.45 when they start talking about the article in specifics and the reaction to it from 9 and the general public.

I haven't heard any of Matt Hill's AFL work yet, but this doesn't bode well...

Yeah I was listening on Sunday wondering who was commentating. I had no idea who it was. At first I thought it sounded slightly like Hame but discounted it straight away as there wasn't the usual knobjockery. Thought he might of been South Australian given his pronunciation. Not a horse racing fan so I couldn't place him. He was pretty good. The fact BT has taken him under his wing is concerning.

He was ok in the saints v tigers game.

He did the rowing and flat water kayak/canoeing at the Olympics. Think he did the down hill skiing at the Winter Olympics.

After every time they went under a bridge at about the 300m mark in the rowing in the first 2 days, he would make a comment about how unusual it is for a rowing course to have a bridge to row under. I wrote about it in the Olympics board rowing thread and then others picked up on it and commented about him commenting on the bridge.

I think a few people tweeted about it and he got the feedback, and he didn't mention the bridge in the gold medal races near the end of the rowing events.

The Front Bar mentioned, then took the piss out of Matt Hill last night. Had him doing a race call to the famous Buddy bouncing the ball and leaving Hooker in his wake, MCG goal.

I liked the fact that the article mentioned that Daisey Pearce provided more insight that half a dozen hall of famers, because she does.

But it didn't throw out massive amounts of w***ery over her commentary, because its not actually that good. Just better than the alternatives.

Did enjoy Caro's dismissive slap down of Penberthy
This is how paranoid the crowies are.

Thursday, Caro says she is working on something big and controversial. Rowe automatically thinks its the camp, says some shit about it.

Friday, Penbo replays Rowe's little pants shitting effort, then goes off as if that's what she is working on.

Saturday, Caro publishes her story on Cyril, Kennett and the Hawthorn fall out.

As both President Macron and Bruce would say - delicious.

Just had a listen to Rocky and Fantasia's latest podcast offering. They interviewed Aliir Aliir - pretty good interview, mostly light-hearted personal stuff (are we allowed to laugh yet ;)).

Turns out Aliir's nickname at the club is Chanders, as in chandelier, and seems Willem Drew is called Fanta :smilev1:

Good article on The Roar:

AFL 2022 Radar: 'You just can't trust Port Adelaide'

They’ve got a friendly enough draw (on paper) to avoid this, getting Hawthorn, Adelaide, Carlton, West Coast and St Kilda in the first seven weeks. But if they splutter to a 3-4 start or something, the heat will get turned up quickly.

If we get to 3-4 from here they'll sign Kenny to a new extension.

What the fu** has horse racing got to do with footy?
Nothing. But this guy is a professional broadcaster and appears to do his homework. He's not some ex player dickhead. Bruce came through as a Horse Race Caller too (Yes Bruce became a parody of himself as the years rolled on but he was a very good play by play caller and had exceptional knowledge).

When 7 lost the rights during 2002-06 years, 9 pushed they weren't boring like 7 angle, and pushed the entertainment side of game day coverage. 10 went for a bit more entertainment than 7 but played it straight compared to 9, and that's partly why they ditched 9 and went in with 7 for the 2007-11 rights deal.

Bruce was told to sex it up after 7 won back the rights, especially Friday nights and that's why he became a parody. He tried to out do Dennis, but Dennis had natural wit, Bruce had to manufacture his new upbeat entertainment style.

He didn't change his athletics/olympic broadcasting style, nobody wanted or forced him to change that, or his horse racing hosting and the odd race call he did, after he came back to call the footy in 2007.

Horse race callers have a long history of broadcasting footy (all codes) on both radio and TV. This is what i remember off the top of my head

VFL/AFL
Bruce on 7
Gerard Whateley on ABC radio both horseracing and footy, SEN footy and odd game on Fox Footy
Peter Donegan has called footy for 7, 9, 10, ABC and called horseracing for 7 and 10, calls athletics, has called at Summer and Winter Olympics, Comm games, golf, tennis etc he does it all.

old SANFL
Bruce on 5DN both racing and footy and ADS 7 in Adelaide
Ray Fewings 5DN both racing and footy, 5AA footy and footy on NWS 9 in Adelaide
Mark Aiston called horse racing and then SANFL on ABC in 1990's and early '00's

WAFL
George Grljusich called WAFL, AFL, trotting, the odd horse race, got to always call the 3 day equestrian events at the Olympics, think he went to 6 of them and all up called 39 sports in a 40 year career.

NRL
Ray Warren started calling trots and rugby league in country NSW. he got a job at 10 when they had the rights in early 80's, was sacked around 1987 from 10, called the horse for 5 or 6 years before he got a permanent job calling RL at 9 when they won the rights think in 1992. 9 had State of Origin when they didn't have rights to NSWRL in the 80's and when he got sacked from 10 he did that with Darrell Eastlake.

I agree, thought he called the game well, just sort of commentated on what was happening, didn't editorialise really and certainly didn't spend 5 minutes going on about players haircuts out "gadget type operators" in the crowd.

I'm sure channel 7 will turn him into another flog soon enough.
