Opinion Matthew Nicks: Adelaide's Coach

Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide's rebuild?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

  • Firmly no (he should be sacked)

We don't need to do anything.

His W/L record will seal his fate.

The board would have expected to see improvement this season.

I agree, although I think the board might give him another free pass this year. Winning the showdown probably bought him another season in their eyes.

So far he has it fairly easy but that can't go on forever as you say win/loss will eventually get him.

More data indicating we don’t apply enough pressure across the ground.

Our defence is exposed to many more defensive one-on-ones than average, assuming because the ball comes in fast before we can get numbers back. But only lose them at a standard rate.

Don’t blame the young key defenders when they seem to struggle, it’s not their fault.

Or at least some form of development of the most critical part of a footy team. He’s rejoicing in the fab 4 going backwards. Note that there’s no blame being levelled at Laird or Keays. This dimwit can’t move past cooked or injured Sloane and a meaningless Crouch..

That's why he is selecting the team the way he is.

His selection philosophy hasn’t changed. He’d have not gotten the gig if it didn’t align with Pyke. Same recruiters = same successful candidate. Nothing has changed since Neil. And now we have the benefit of VB infesting the place daily. Nothing has changed.

The concerning part is the extra loss in development

If he gets punted mid next year that is 20+ games into Sloane.

It's madness.

Nobody could predict Sloane’s continued selection as a first choice mid regardless of form.
Plenty has changed old mate.

Apart from names and faces, name a few meaningful changes.

This is just criticism for the sake of criticism, unless you’re privy to what goes on behind closed doors (you’re not)

Well - I have discussed this a lot on here, but the changes we made in September 2014 were rather impressive and meaningful.

We sacked a coach who we had just extended until the end of 2016 and brought in a new CEO/Coach and selected a new captain right out of left field. We publicly identified our premiership window to open in 2017, which it did. So yeah - I am not sure how a footy club can make changes more meaningful than those?

I begrudgingly agree with 1970crow

Sure we sacked a coach for a variety of reasons.

But we are already back dropping Juniors and protecting seniors in worse form, remember dropping a rising star nominee to rush back a senior?

It seems to be an ingrained culture, we've done our best by sacking as many as we could but that hasn't solved the issue.

Just think next year when Nick's gets the boot, we will have Sloane just having celebrated his 250th game Matt Crouch approaching 150 and no meaningful development in our midfield.

I don't think it should be merely win / loss that he is judged on. It should be whether our skills are inproving, game plan is visible, players are developing, our squad is being fully maximised and whether accurate assessments are made on every player in the squad. We need to see the visible improvement onfield and a coach that is flexible to try anything for the team to improve.
True, but he is now in his third year and the losses are still piling up.

We have had plenty of superficial changes, but none of them have been organization or cultural changes.

We still elect to drop an inexperienced player and keep a senior player on the team. That’s an organizational change we refuse to make. So, no plenty of changes have not occluded

It’s like the senior players pick the side.

Gee, I'm surprised by that number for Brisbane, letting so many balls get into defence
And on the other side, St Kilda not letting many in

The most disappointing thing of the season to date is I've seen no improvement from last year of those core players we put games into over 2020 and 2021 seasons..Honestly the coaches need to start making calls on guys like Jones, Mchenry (these 2 i've seen enough that they wont be in our best team even by next season). Mcasey - ffs just put him in the AFL Team and see if he can play already - his last chance of a block of 5-10 games we need another tall defender RIGHT NOW, Frampton is not the answer and needs to be delisted end of season.

I wish our head coach had some balls and put trust in the youth to win games, it is extremely frustrating, especially that it is our older more experienced players playing like absolute dogshit. end rant.

That's why he is selecting the team the way he is.

This just points to his incompetence, he truly believes selecting Sloane to play midfield enhances our chances of winnng.

Its ludicrous, we would have a better chance of winning if Sloane was out (and maybe Crouch) hav Laird and Keays as our experienced mids with the youngsters rotating through.

Asked above, answered below.
we see the fruits of their efforts at selection every week. I don't need to be in the room to understand their philosophies, they're laid bare every Thursday evening.

Bottom line is that through 2021 and now 2022, we are seeing that the club has not changed at all.
We like to rotate through the coaches, but keep the same philosophies, somehow having convinced ourselves it was successful before (spoiler: It wasn't).

Nick's is now fully on the 'matter of time before he is sacked' conveyer belt. It's a shame because I think he has some great qualities.
He has a choice to make right now. Maintain status quo, get sacked and keep the merry-go-round going, OR buck against the trend and just maybe have a coaching career.

Thinking that he can change course ignores that these are not philosophies imposed upon him. If he didn't espouse these as founding principles of his coaching philosophy he'd have not gotten a second interview. He's done.
