there was too much give and go (to grass) and hot potato handballing today from the entire team

Darcy wasn't the handballing to grass culprit, but I'm just not sure that's how we want to be/should be playing.

i know the days of "just kick it" are gone, but geez, i found myself wishing for some more longer kicks today.
Thing is while we dick around with it, teams set up their defence and bring their half forwards up. Then we turn it over and they a run past our midfield.

Doesnt help we have too few marking targets and forward movement. So we kick to 3 on 1/4 on 2 contests

At the game I was amazed at how often he’d surface from congestion with the ball. Those saying that metres gained were a defining factor in judging his performance aren’t taking into account the desperate need that we have for someone who can get the ball cleanly in the midfield heat. If he had the fumbly Colyer hands he’d have touched the ball 44 times but had half the possessions. That makes a huge difference

yep. the quick handballing gameplan can work. if you can stick your handballs under pressure consistently. we can't and don't.

other teams know that's our Plan A and work hard to make it hard for us, and if we have a Plan B(?), it's no good.

he was good. i don't think a 13K to 31 HB ratio is ideal though.

Give him another decent outlet player to get the ball to and it won't matter that he doesn't go long with it.

One of the reasons Jobe was so good was that he always found a teammate in space around the pack to give the ball off to.
Jobe was also able to hold onto the ball to let the play unfold. he was then able to find a play who was in a better position than he, by either handballing OR kicking.

Darcy is not there yet, he's very quick to get rid of it, not always to a player in a better position

He was good, but it was one of the less impressive 44 disposal games I've seen.

Last year was 42 disposals - 6 marks - 2 goals - 7 i50s - 9 clearances and 619m gained.

This year was 44 disposals - 1 mark - 0 goals - 3 i50s - 12 clearances and 310m gained.
metres gained stat ignores that any territory we made up, the Pies were using as a launchpad to score. I don't mind the 310m when you think he was probably avoiding a turnover.

HF seems to be where we break down. We could be preserving the ball, pressing the backs up and running our opponents zone around the ground. but the lack of HF marking targets hurts.
Cox and/or Jones up there would be handy.

He was significantly more damaging last year, basically, on every metric we have available.

It was a good game, not a great game. Unlike last year.

I thought he had a great game. Played like an absolute madman and just kept winning the footy when it was in dispute. Great sign given last week was the most criticism he's ever copped from the media.

Well at least we know the club has reached god tier on rehabbing that particular injury...
