Honestly the league needs to get serious around out of play striking of any variety.

If you strike an opponent out of play that's got to be at least two weeks, to the head adds another etc.

Can't be letting the juniors think they're hard hitting guys off the ball

Just saw that the league actually apologised to Lance Franklin because AFL legal counsel Andrew Woods had the audacity to say, “There’s kids watching, there’s families watching, it’s cowardly behaviour.”

In response the apology was, “There are no cowardly players in the AFL, let alone Lance Franklin," an AFL statement read. Lance Franklin is a champion of our game. Legal counsel assisting the tribunal used his own words to describe the circumstances of the strike on Trent Cotchin, namely that Mr Cotchin was reasonably not expecting to be struck by Mr Franklin. Trent Cotchin is a premiership captain and one of the most respected leaders in the competition.”

So in conclusion, don’t call out cowardly acts even if you are saying that a kid watching the cowardly act might copy it with his or her friends at school. Calling cowardly acts cowardly acts might offend adult champions of the game. 😂

AFL: "There are no cowardly players in the AFL..."

Won’t happen but intentional and sever to cause harm = 3 to 4 weeks. Umpire did his job as well and reported him on the spot. When was the last time that happened? Will kill my fantasy team but such acts should not be tolerated.
The media are already playing it down however.....amazing.

Wouldn't have thought anything more than 2 weeks myself.

It was reckless and idiotic, but hardly malicious.

you don't head butt someone in the face in a non-malicious way, fuddy........that's like respectfully kicking someone in the head..........

I think it was more of a brain fade from Smith (which doesn't mean he shouldn't go unpunished) than any intent to actually hurt 2E.

He needs to be better than that (am
sure Bevo would have had a stern word to him afterwards) and a couple of weeks off seems the right penalty to me, he isn't really known as a dirty player/history of thuggery, so I take that into account too..

he'll get two - and some story about a difficult upbringing will bring it down to one - then his visits to the children's hospital will reduce it to a fine - then his importance to afl marketing will be brought up and he'll walk away with three brownlow votes and a weekend in the otways...........

You are not even allowed to headbutt in the UFC.

A mixed martial arts sport where you can punch, elbow, kick, knee and try to choke your opponent unconscious.

If it's deemed too dangerous of an act for a combat sport. It certainly has no place happening on a footy field.

Stamp it out AFL. Show it won't be tolerated.

It has to be one of the most uncontrolled acts of aggression doesn't it? Get it wrong, or victim turns/moves their head, you could easily fracture an eye socket, break their nose ... or worse.

By not punishing these not cowardly acts suffiecently, the AFL is opening itself up to the possibility of far uglier incidents. It still surprises me how many times players are clearly punched or head butted, to then exaggerate contact rather than retaliate.

What happens if ZT just punches Smith in the face after being head butted? Cotchin cracking Franklin in the face straight after?

Credit to the players for keeping it together.

This is correct. Head butting is a really quick way to rearrange facial features, especially against a grounded opponent.

Some people thought Tuohy overreacted, but I reckon Smith got the nerve in the eyebrow, that mfer hurts

You forgot he agrees to shave his head for charity

Ben Ainsworth is cleared of wrongdoing after hitting Ben McKay in the head leaving him concussed. A football action.😂

I thought this gag was about him escaping punishment??

I was just about to write this off as a football incident, just unlucky that McKay was sliding in from the side at an awkward height.

But I think I detected a little lift of Ainsworth's arm/elbow at the right/wrong time... Hard to tell from angles, but I THINK it was deliberate. Maybe.

Ultimately the MRO ruled there was no way the 179cm Ainsworth could collect the 201cm McKay high.... Pretty sure....

Agree.

Pretty sure he decided to "bump" or raise his elbow into McKays head at the last second.
