The harsh reality is Moore is irreplaceable.

While the return of Howe will halve the loss of class and experience now missing from our defence it's unrealistic to think he can compete physically with the premier key forwards in the competition like a Hawkins, Lynch, Cameron, McKay or Daniher etc.

Of course the loss of Moore is only compounded by the retirement of Roughead and we're now left without any legitimate key defender with a proven record of performance at the highest level.

The one glimmer of hope has been the emergence of Murphy this season, a player who reads the game well, plays with courage and is stronger than ever.

At 192cm though he to can't be expected to beat those goal square gorillas contest after contest.

So what of the others?

Trey Ruscoe 20yo 193cm 93kg 15 games.
193cm really? Listed at 190cm when drafted and still looks more suited to playing as that 3rd tall defender for mine. Regardless at only 20 and with 15 games under his belt it's a big ask but given he was preferred ahead of others last week will probably get another chance to stake his claim.

Jack Madgen 29yo 192cm 94kg 49 games.
The most experienced of those in line to replace Moore but just like some of his younger teammates is undersized so no gain to be had there. Hard to argue he doesn't always give his all but the emergence of Murphy has only amplified his lack of class. Would be the safe option but little potential for him to defy our expectations.

Will Kelly 21yo 194cm 92kg 3 games
Obviously can't be recommended on the back of dominant VFL form but I'm not writing him off just yet and we should look at the example of Murphy to see what can happen with some continuity. Continuity is so important for player development and between injury, COVID and positional swaps it's been a nightmare for Will so far. While height wise not much to be gained over the 2 above if we were looking at someone to play as a blue collar lock down tall defender I'd probably lean towards giving him first opportunity ahead of Madgen if only because any potential upside remains a great unknown. Can he swim or will he sink? Will genetics count for anything?

The tallest of our potential inclusions but also the lightest. Like Kelly has been switched to defence this season. By all reports has shown glimpses of promise but not unexpectedly still a raw and skinny prospect in just his second season. His inclusion would arguably be our bravest selection choice but McRae has shown he's prepared to take a risk.

5.Charlie Dean 21yo 195cm 89kg 0 games
Probably the best player to yet play a single senior AFL game. That's not a snipe at Dean BTW just a comment on some who had him already penciled in as best 22 when he was out injured. Having said all that he might well have been front and centre in the mind of McRae prior to being injured again yesterday in the VFL. Very frustrating.

At the end of the day there is currently no standout option to come in and aid Howe, Murphy and Maynard IMO and most likely we'll end up cycling through a few players until we settle on the best equipped.

Personally I'm wondering if it's at all possible in today's game we could effectively split the ground in two and use whichever one of our rucks is attending the centre bounce purely in the defensive half so they can be in a position to more easily fill a hole in the d50 while getting the other and/or Mihocek to patrol the forward half.

Kind of feel some out of the box thinking will be required to lessen our exposure to the premier tall forwards of the competition.
What is your opinion of one of our ruckman filling Darcy's position? Could Cameron or Cox cover so a big body is present.

Before the news this morning . Was starting to feel like 2018 again with our key back stocks. in 2018 at one stage we had Oxley, Murphy, Langdon , Howe (raw as ever) and Goldy off an ACL as our options ,

Yeah howe was nowhere near 100%, missed something like 5 weeks with a corky that bled into his thigh or something.

Channel 7 news clearly shows him walking from the back of his car to the drivers door unassisted, if he had a ACL he would have had his crutches all the way to the drivers door, he was clearly walking without crutches around the car
Maybe it's a hoax.
Darcy took a dive late so we could bring on the sub with fresh legs.
The crutches go in the bin tomorrow?
