What the hell for? Who do you think we could get better in the draft than him?
What has he actually done? We'd be getting him in as a key defender, which is a role he has only played one game at at AFL level, against a lowly West Coast where he got 7 touches and 3 marks.

We'd be ponying up pick 33 for an athlete and hoping it works out.

If we're talking about turning a forward into a defender, I'd rather throw that 33 at Harry Lemmey if he has slid as much as draft boards seem to think he has.

If we're talking key defenders in the draft... Van Es just dominated the draft combine and heck, even Hayes might slide due to his 2km weirdness.

As excited as I am about getting JHF into the team, I'm still not sold on us in the present due to the coach we still have, so I'm more than happy to keep developing young talent. Esava is also fairly young, but doesn't seem a natural footballer to me. A late pick as a flyer? Sure.

But if we end up doing the trade, I'll be all aboard the Esava train and hoping he does find his spot in our back 6.

I reckon Bonner and/or Hayes are a big chance to be traded out for a pick or two.

We only have 33 and 60 and Geelong only have 25, 58. 64 and the Bowes trade to go, where they get 7 for the salary cap dump but have said they wont split it to get Henry from Collingwood. That could change.

I think you could be right, I'm not sure where Hayes fits with the thinking on rucks at Port he doesn't fit the model.

I don't like the chances of an athletic giant at pick 33 who can make an instant impact.

Esava wants to come here, he knows he'd be loved, he knows we'd need him.

Far better option than pick 33. We've shown already we aren't all that great with drafting and developing KPD of late anyway.

Definitely not, they're way too far away from being ready to hold up a key role in defence. Its Esavas strength as much as anything that makes him appealing.

If we miss on Ratugolea we're likely going to end up with Tomlinson. We need a big strong tall defender and there aren't many around. Can't draft any that are ready to play next year.

How sure are we that Ratogulea is a better defender than McKenzie or Clurey, he's played defence against two VFL sides. Todd Marshall would probably be impressive in defence in the SANFL

We know for sure he is a better ruck anyway.

I see this as a bloke that will primarily be used as a defender, but will be more versatile than our other defenders.

I'd be on the wait and see train with Esava.
You don't just wake up one morning and decide you are going to be a AFL standard defender.

IQ and temperament along with a hell of a lot of work.

I would try and hang on to 33 if possible there's going to be someone there on draft night who we wouldn't mind giving a run.

Wait and see how Bonner ends up maybe use that pick if it's around the 35-45 range.

Yeah, I do not see Ratugolea as a 'must have'. He would be handy for sure but we have to retain something for the Draft. As it stands we have #33, #60 then it goes from pick #84 upward. History shows there have been good players taken around pick #60 but I am not sure about our chances with the #84, #102, #120 picks. It looks like we may need another deal that gives us the picks to be able to use the #33 pick on Ratugolea.

I asked about Bonner a couple of days back but no one has heard anything since his manager denied that Riley had been speaking with North. Similarly I have not heard or read anything about Sam Hayes looking for a better opportunity. I would like to keep Hayes but if Ratugolea (198cm) comes on board and with Visentini and Teakle in the wings we probably will not need him.

Doesn't sound like Geelong want to let him go. Probably comes down to Esava pleading his case to Geelong.

Pick 33 is a fair trade but doesn't matter what I think.

I think its likely this isn't about Esava any more, its all about Ollie Henry.

If Henry can be done without Port, or can't be done with Port, then Esava is more likely to stay.

If Geelong need more capital for Henry, then they will get Esava done in order to achieve that higher priority trade.
