And isn't he doing a great job with the hawk's racism inquiry. This is what a lawyer (representing one of the people make allegations against former Hawthorn officials) said about the independence of the enquiry. “The barristers conducting the investigation will of course act independently and with integrity; nobody is suggesting otherwise. But they have been selected and commissioned by the AFL, their terms of reference written by the AFL, their report will be to the AFL, and the AFL will control its release".

“The AFL’s own lawyers are assisting them and acting as gatekeepers of all the evidence they will consider. Independence is not solely a question of fact, but also one of impression.”

Maybe I am simple but how hard would it be to create an independent enquiry? The whole set up of this enquiry appears to be so the AFL can control any damage that may be uncovered. That is not an "independent enquiry". I have no idea what the truth is or who the people making the claims are but already I think I trust them more than the AFL. If this is why Gill is staying, then he needs to just go away ASAP. Benny Gale has far more credibility to do this enquiry

He basically laid out the facts. It’s up to the reader to draw their own conclusions.

1)Hird wanted them bigger and stronger
2) The Weapon got Dank.
3) Dank was dodgy as f
4) Hird wanted it legal but cutting edge
5) Players were told it was legit
6) Players, when asked by random testers, did NOT disclose they’d taken anything
7) Demetriou tipped off Evans. Evans told Hird not to tell anyone. Hence they fell out
8) Demetriou left it to Gil to try to negotiate with ASADA to get players off.
9) Gil and Little pressured Hird to take the deal to end it
10) Players initially got off but then WADA jumped in and they were found guilty. No one tested positive to anything.

There’s plenty more and I may have missed a lot of important facts.
IMO the players thought they weren’t cheating but kept what they were doing secret. Dank, Weapon we’re dodgy and were involved with some very ordinary people.
Remember this all started because the Feds were monitoring organised crime and it’s potential to compromise athletes and rig sporting events.

I recommend anyone who has an opinion on this matter to read both books. They will round out your knowledge of the issue.

Was it addressed why they tried to fight it and not just roll over like Cronulla did?

I always assumed Hirds wife being a lawyer was the main reason.

Essendon were quick to reach settelment with players which no doubt prohibited further legal action.

Interesting comments, in an article written by Caro when they settled the final 2 players, in retrospect.

Essendon boss Campbell, who has overseen the millions of dollars in settlements with the support of the AFL and various legal teams, has described the complex negotiations as the toughest part of the entire drug scandal.

And yet when you consider Campbell's performance over the past two years: the securing of John Worsfold and his successful first two years at the club, a finals berth in the year the players came back, the Joe Daniher signature, the 2017 profit, the debt repayment forecast and now the final of 34 player settlements; you'd have to say he's seriously outperformed those early expectations.

Perhaps for Essendon it's not such a bad thing that Campbell stuck around to clean up the mess.

That’s the most disgusting part of this. Senior players betrayed the trust that young kids put in them. Yes, there were breaches of trust all round but the kids were the most vulnerable. Probably also told told/threatened to keep it to themselves.

Hopefully, in time, a lot more gets written about this horrible chapter. There is much more truth to come out but probably plenty of NDA’s have been signed as well.

And what an odious tool of the rich and powerful they are.

Tool(s) is the right word .

They are so beholden to their Essendonian coterie and the w***ers from Keillor , Aberfeldie Niddrie and Moonee Ponds ( you can see them all parking their Ducati’s on Keillor Rd on a Sunday , in fact I see them right now !!). Pffftttt …. New money …..

I no longer care if the players were “innocent” in this . those players condoned the behavior of their supporters , keep calling them “loyal” when treating every like crap .
Unreasonable, yeah . But they treated us so atrociously from 1993 that too much pain and embarrassment for them is not enough . we all know that druggies supporter , the one who thinks that they are superior and that their 16 flags translate to anything in 2022 . They are now as relevant as Melbourne from 1970 to 2020 .
I cannot wait until Scott gets done fir bullying at that club .

They can rot in hell .
