They play night games at the MCG in winter.
The average overnight temp in Hobart is only 2 degrees lower than Melbourne. Of course you could play most of the games in June and July in the afternoon. Matches compete with local footy everywhere. You would be talking an 8 or 9 week period where the side will most likely be away every second week so maybe 2 Saturday games and 3 Sunday games or vice versa .

They are still keen on the roof but the discussion about playing games in winter has been hugely over exaggerated and made into an issue that is really not an issue. In reality it could end up being no night games. I do not see the roof as an issue but if they get it then it does negate any comment of playing footy on a 5 degree night in winter.

As for Sicily of course he had to walk back the comments. Their major sponsor is Tasmania. It would be like Merrett saying he preferred to shop at Harvey Norman and would not buy anything from Amart.

I am not buying player retention as an issue. Anyone saying Hobart is not a great place to live has not been there. It is only 2 degrees colder on average in winter and the fact is they will be playing in front of around 20,000 in the 25,000 seat stadium so it will be a decent atmosphere.

What can not happen is the AFL just give them same amount of first round picks GWS and to a lesser extent GC got. All that does is set them up to be cherry picked in the same way GC and GWS have been. There needs to be a more even spread of picks and even picks that have to be traded for players along with access to state league players.
The difference is the mcg is protected from the elements, playing at launceston or bellerive are totally different conditions. That’s why a new stadium will help combat that.

1.2% is what? About 8 or 9 extra players from WA?
0.12% is about 1 player (2019 had larger playing lists), so 1.2% should be 10 players

I mean not that it's mandatory or anything, Queensland and NSW had 2 teams each despite only having about 45-50 players in the whole league from their states respectively, and Tasmania were at ~35 (doubt it's changed much but..)

Canberra should be team 20 but that looks unlikely. Port should have been the first Adelaide team and then Norwood when Port came in tbf.

I know that those in Canberra have been solid in supporting GWS and has given the GWS 7000 odd more members but I still think it has been counter productive to the promotion of GWS. I have friend in Sydney who I see when I go to Panthers games every year and they are bemused why the side to promote the growth of footy in Western Sydney is also being used to promote footy in the ACT. It is not ideal IMO. You would think that they could at least ask Sydney to play a couple of games there.

In agree Canberra would be a front runner for team 20. NT will eventually get in but there are issues and they would have to play games in Alice at certain stages of the season. Long term you would think there would be a Canberra side and a NT side along with third sides in Adelaide and Perth with a maybe for Cairns.

I was not talking about playing at the old grounds. Was referring to playing at a new stadium without a roof :thumbsu:

Our 150th game last year... I was there. And I was frozen to my seat, which was under cover, with about a thousand layers on.

The food I bought was cold before I got to my seat, such was the ghoulish wind howling through the place.

Granted, it would've been helpful if I wasn't just about the only person sitting in the entire row, but still. I bought an electric heated jacket after that.

Figured if I'm going to make the effort to turn up to a game where we get comprehensively thrashed, I'd like to still be able to feel my toes at the end of it.

The argument isn’t about whether there’s rich people in WA or not… I’m talking about people who are already involved with said sanfl clubs who would be involved in the bid to bring a team into the afl. In WA you’d be asking a person to switch alliances from a west coast or Fremantle.
And I think that's a big assumption on your part.

I think giving a license to a already established club that has a supporter base over trying to establish a brand new club in cities where most of the fans go for either afl team. How many supporters would switch from Adelaide or port for a new developed team in Adelaide? Or likewise how many would switch to joondalup from west coast or Fremantle in Perth. It’s a much harder market to target. That’s why I think bringing an established side into the afl is the way to go.
The Joondalup Falcons would be the currently relocated West Perth who have been in the WAFL since 1891.

Sicily is an idiot given he plays for Hawthorn who have had sponsorship from Tassie for years. He may well have spoken how he feels but bad thing to see from captain of a club that plays there and gets sponsorship etc.

Personally I'd rather live on the GC than Brisbane (or Tassie). The Suns player retention issues are more about the club than the location I would have thought. Giants have had retention issues too although that seems more salary cap driven. And I guess when it became apparent that a premiership wasnt going to happen despite the draft concessions, then time to move on.

I don't mind there being a Tassie team but it doesnt make much sense to me unless there is a pathway to there being a 20th team (or another team folding eg Saints or Norf - I am not wishing that on them just noting those are the 2 most obvious).

The cost of propping up Tassie when Suns and Giants are not successful (+ a potential 20th team?) is a big concern.
would love tassie to pull the sponsorship and uninvite the Hawks.

unhelpful comments on what will be a big week for the state....like Sheeds raining on Scott's parade.

Im ok with Tas getting a team and propping it up. Its one of those "makes sense off paper" deals
i think the afl mis-stepped with GCS not bringing Southport in instead. established fan base and history
Tassie will bring that. it's a footy state. there will be players who don't care for the melbourne/sydney city lights and the alternative that is Hobart.

Agree with or accept all of that. Whatley was saying they'd be creating Adelaide Oval. That seems a real stretch to me.

24 sides could get interesting.
23 rounds. even draw. season stays the same.

3 in SA and WA im a big advocate for. those cities should have 2 games a weekend.
NT and ACT just round out the national comp
Cairns...well. why not. get a bit of Nth Qld going

I can see it being 24 teams by 2055-ish.

Tassie in 2027, Canberra probably by 2030.

Norwood and probably Joondalup in the early 40's.

NT Thunder and Cairns Crocodiles for 23 and 24 in the 50's.

i feel truly envious of people in the US solely because i feel like there's always sports on, baseball, basketball etc, would be nice to see one day.

They certainly keep the masses distracted by entertainment better than we do.

It may be a bit of a stretch but if they create a mini Optus Stadium on the site it would be a similar set up to Adelaide right on the edge of the CBD where people can walk to the ground from the city and the whole precinct is going to be developed with hospitality venues etc.

Townsville should be the next team after Tassie. A growing area and have just had a new stadium built for the Cowboys which they could share. The Townsville Taipans.

Do you think Townsville can support both NRL and AFL ?
Cairns has always been the strongest AFL area in the far North and the AFL already has inroads there .
Can not see the NRL cooperating with the AFL over stadium use and fixtures. Pete is at war with the AFL in QLD .

I definitely think they can support both. I's a sports mad town. The NRL don't own the stadium so would have to come to the party in any negotiations.
