Not completely convinced the curse has been lifted yet. The Titans NRLW team just choked in the grand final after being ahead by 6 points with around 8 minutes to go. Seems like the commentator spoke the curse back into existence when the Titans were ahead with less than 10 minutes to go and he reminded everyone that our city is about to celebrate its first national championship.
Don't get me wrong, it was awesome that we were able to claim a VFL flag last week but I think for the curse to be truly lifted we need to win a first grade/senior premiership in a national league. The VFL is not a national competition.

Suns only Queensland team that know how to win a grand final
Gold Coast's TSS (The Southport School) made history yesterday by winning Basketball Australia's All Schools National Championship senior gold medal game against the highly fancied Lake Ginninderra College from Canberra. In fact, they smashed the Lakers 127 - 66. Ben Tweedy was the standout for TSS with 42 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists. Queensland teams rarely win national championships in basketball and even more rare for a Gold Coast school to do it. Would be nice if TSS could remove their AFL ban and allow us to tap into their incredible resources.
In the women's U17 division we saw another Gold Coast team come out victorious with Hillcrest Christian College being named national basketball champions. Our very own academy stars Sunny Lappin (top centre) and Ava Usher (bottom centre) both played in this gold medal win for Hillcrest. In fact, Ava Usher was best on and top scorer with 13 points and Sunny Lappin was the second highest scorer with 8 points. For those who follow basketball you may also notice FIBA Hall of Famer Pero Cameron (second from the right) is their coach. I'm glad Hillcrest is more open to Aussie rules (thanks Skinny) than TSS because we're able to foster footy talent from there.

There's also talk that the Gold Coast council will fund the creation of a high performance basketball centre (presumably next to the 10k indoor arena that will be built) is on the cards as they attempt to move the NBL headquarters from Melbourne to the GC. As they say, built it and they will come. I think this is a positive outcome for us because basketball and Aussie rules go hand in hand in a lot of ways and we're already seeing many junior athletes play footy over the winter months and basketball over the summer months so I expect that to increase and we'll potentially get access to high level Queensland basketballers that wouldn't have otherwise played footy in the past.
Will be great to have a local professional sports team to support over the summer months as well!

But if it gets up it'll be good for Queensland to have another team to make up for Townsville not being in the top league anymore.

Both the Titans and Suns with big name coaches have been talking big over the Summer but both these trials are suggesting the playing group of both teams are nothing but hot air.

So just for the record on season eve the betting odds has

May as well also add in the current opening round odds now they we're just under a week from both the Suns and Titans playing their first real game of the season. Both GC teams are expected to win on Saturday.

22,086 was the crowd figure for Dimma's first game in charge against Richmond at Carrara today. Fourth largest home attendance we've ever had and the largest that's not against Collingwood. Conversely, it looks like a half empty stadium at Robina right now. Titans are also getting smashed by the lowly Dragons 28-4 late in the second half. The Titans were heavy favourites going into this game.
Interesting starts to their seasons tonight. This is exactly why the AFL wants us to start our season in the same week as the NRL.

Well, I think the AFL would be happy about it even if some locals aren't. You can clearly see what they've tried to do here and it's worked out perfectly for the AFL. I didn't realise this until today but the Titans actually have a BYE next week which means the Suns are presented with another opportunity to win over the locals before the Titans take the field again. The Broncos play at Suncorp on Thursday, the Dolphins play in Redcliffe on Sunday and the Lions are playing in Perth on Sunday. This means the Suns are the only South East Queensland team playing on Saturday.

Insipid performance by the titans today. They look terrible. Big tino down as well with a serious injury by the looks.
They're also in the process of trying to convince their other marquee player David Fifita to not take up his player option this year, which would release him from his contract and allow him to become a free agent. Performances like today won't do the Titans any favours in regards to retaining high quality players.
Maybe Haslar has already lost the players? Resistance towards the new regime? The Bulldogs are legitimately one of the worst teams in the NRL so if you're getting smashed 32-0 by them in a season that you're expected to jump into the top 8 then something has gone drastically wrong.

If we lose Fifita it would be a complete disaster close up shop imo. From what the titans have dished up in their first 2 games I reckon they’re going to be contenders for the wooden spoon especially if Tino’s injury is confirmed to be an ACL

The way to go is to be passionate about the whole community. That city passion we lack. The interstate fans give so much more than the local fans and that is why.

What devastation. Sadly some are enjoying it. Facts.
Definitely devastating news. Never like to see any players getting hurt, particularly important ones like Tino. Maybe the injury will galvanise the group and they can score a win at Robina next week against the Dolphins. Season is well and truly alive if they can get the W over the Phins to go 1-2 for the season.
