I'm not saying the issue is simple - I don't think any of us have easy answers on bathrooms and gendered spaces. And I don't think anyone claims Laidley is a saint. Doesn't make Laidley's story any less human.

You made some sweeping crass judgements, seemingly due to toxic political agendas rather than human ones. Some humility and reflection wouldn't go astray. It's a shame the only posters that called you out on it played the "man" not the ball...

I disagree with you but I’m not sour about it and yes, I do have two daughters and they both have multiple friends who are at different phases of transitioning gender identity. Not that it’s any of your business or mine for that matter.

The way I see it is that she loves North Melbourne and was one pivotal part of one of the greatest days of the 90’s and increasingly lifetime

If it’s good enough for the AFL world to forgive and move on for all the individual scandals of the past 30 years, then she deserves it as equally as these others.

Haven't seen the documentary yet, but I empathise with Dani's life story. The police's actions were an egregious breach of safety and privacy.

Can’t forget though that she was there due to stalking, which is a form of domestic violence and abuse. As a victim of stalking myself, it's very jarring to have Dani financially profiting off being a perpetrator of domestic violence and being applauded in the media.

I completely understand why some women object to trans women using their bathrooms for example. i think that's fair enough especially in cases where those women are victims of sexual abuse or various other forms of male violence.

But I also understand why trans women don't wanna use mens bathrooms and its probably for very similar reasons.

When I see terms like TERF (trans exclusionary radical feminist) I get why some women see this as another form of male discrimination. When feminist friends of mine say Bruce Kaitlyn Jenner did what men have always wanted to do, possess the last thing women had as their own - ie their identity I do kind of get it.

But I think its also obvious that the reason Dani Laidley was a ****ed up mess when her trans status was not publicly known is because her trans status wasn't publicly known and the acceptance and care society and her former clubs and the AFL have shown her has probably done more to keep her mental health (and as a result drug abuse) under control than anything else. IE If she'd felt comfortable coming out as a player or coach then maybe she'd never have had a serious ice habit to begin with. And all of the associated problems including stalking.

Like most of the issues humans still face after decades, centuries or millenia of trying to solve problems there are no easy answers and the difficult answers involve patience and empathy at the moment (at another time they may require something else but its only very recently that we've applied those things to solving these problems.)

What happens when we crack the human genome to the point where we can willingly and easily change our biological sex? And probably extend our lives 100 or 200 more years? Everyone will be changing sex/gender and probably having kids as men and as women.

A guy called Iain Banks wrote a series of novels about this idea using an almost human species called the Culture. Its worth reading. He also wrote a story called The Wasp Factory which is a head **** but related...
