Watching jesse hogan half ass go for the ball makes you realise how elite lynch is and reiwoldt was. Some horrible efforts letting the ball waltz out of forward 50

David Koch has come out swinging against critics of Port Adelaide under coach Ken Hinkley, stating people have “really short memories”.

Unfortunately for Koch, the Power chairman, his memories about the history of the club need a lot of work.

Speculation over Hinkley’s future raged throughout 2023 until he signed a two-year contract extension in August.

Optimism was high after Hinkley guided Port to a 13-game winning streak and third place on the AFL ladder entering September.

Consecutive finals defeats, however, to the Lions in Brisbane and then GWS at home, poured a little extra fuel on the simmering fire that is Hinkley’s coaching performance at the helm of the Power.

Those losses left Hinkley with a 5-7 record in finals, with just two postseason victories in the past nine seasons.

After 11 seasons and 248 games in charge, Hinkley is yet to coach Port to an AFL grand final.

The manner of Port’s exit this season has raised fresh questions about Hinkley’s tenure at Port and Koch went on Adelaide radio to defend his coach and that contract extension.

“No it wasn’t (a mistake to re-sign Hinkley),” Koch said on radio station FIVEaa.

“You think we should sack a coach who has the second-best win-loss record over four years?

“(The fans) would’ve been shaking their head at the end of 2003 as well, exactly the same when we went out in straight sets in ‘01, ‘02 and ‘03 and the club stuck together and really focused in ‘04.

“Everyone has really short memories.”

The only problem is, that is not how Port performed in the early 2000s.

Far from it.

Under Mark Williams’ guidance, Port actually won finals in 2002 and 2003 to reach the preliminary final on both occasions, falling to Brisbane and Collingwood respectively.

Williams then guided Port to a breakthrough flag in 2004, leading to his famous speech after lifting the cup “Allan Scott, you were wrong” in a comment directed at the club’s former major sponsor who had been critical of Williams’ reign.

One user on X, formerly Twitter, was quick to point that out.

“@Kochie-online take a history lesson,” they wrote. “We didn’t go out in straight sets in either 2002 or 2003.

“I was at both of those (games). Were you flog.”

Hinkley hasn’t had the opportunity to make any Williams-type proclamations so far in his time in charge.

Koch also had the chance to fiercely defend Hinkley during the interview and did so, but not exactly in the most convincing way.

The Channel 7 personality said Hinkley is the best option “of the coaches that are available”.

“We always said that we would look at Ken’s contract at the end of August so we could assess the year and that was a month-by-month basis,” he said.

“That football committee recommended to the board that Ken was the best coach and we still firmly believe – absolutely believe – he is the best coach to take this club forward.

“It certainly wasn’t a success because even Ken was saying that our pass mark was to make a preliminary final.

“We have got to do better and we think Ken is the person to take us forward.

“I’m as disappointed as anybody. Don’t think that we think it is acceptable to go out in straight sets or not make finals or not win two finals.

“But it’s our view that of the coaches that are available, Ken is the best person to take the club forward.”

It remains to be seen who else becomes available from 2024 and beyond.

First thing Port need to do is f off Koch. They may have a chance for true change then.
