Player Watch #9: Trent Cotchin is an obscenely good 3 x Premiership Captain, Victorian Captain & Brownlow Medalist

Its not just that he had marriage issues, Dimma is quite clearly not even close to the same man that he was 3 or 4 years ago. His whole demeanour was completely different towards the end compared to 2017-2020, just watch his pressers and media appearances. That's fine, people change, but quite clearly that change slowly but surely affected the connection of the entire group.

It may not be an issue at GC as he has already gone through that transformation, that's the only Dimma they will know.

Cotchins missus being strike 1 up on the Goldie ended up leading to a 100k fine. Which ended up contributing to us losing good assistant coaches. The club

Dimma had a wage rise at a time that had negative consequences on the club.
Every player having to take cuts

End of the day. Back in Melbourne, with stand rule we were hovering about 8th.

Injury to Martin was something that we hadn't experienced

Dimma divorce didn't help and was another factor in life post the Gold coast hub
This.

It seems it was A factor but to try and frame it as if it was the only factor is a very narrow viewpoint when it was more of a death by 1000 cuts so to speak

You have your head in the sand. Would you have better insight than Trent Cotchin?

From Cotchin, the captain of the playing group.

“Did it impact my relationship with Dimma? I would say yes, at that point, 100 per cent.

“We had built this culture on a platform of family, connection and love – and Dimma and Danielle’s relationship had played a big part in all this – so it was only natural to be worried about the potential fallout.”

“The second was in my capacity as captain, because I was concerned with how what was unfolding might impact the team.

“Was it a distraction for the group? In my view, at times it was,”

“I am not sure my relationship with him ever got back to the level it had been before.

“For whatever reason, there always seemed to be a bit of a barrier between us. Maybe it wasn’t just the captain and the coach; maybe it was emblematic of the group’s connection that season.

“We didn’t lose the plot in 2021 but if I reflect properly, there just wasn’t the same insane connection between the playing group that had been our suit of armour from 2017 to 2020.”

But yeh I'm sure Cotchin was completely oblivious to how it affected the playing group..... It clearly affected him, and if it affects him, it directly and indirectly affects others.
No head in the sand here.
You keep avoiding our performance on field.lol
Who cares about Cotch's personal relationship with Dimma.
And i'm pretty sure with the sides performance. You know the one that matters too all of us.Clearly any distractions were put to bed in the pre-season.
Anyway thats my view of things.

What do you mean avoiding on field? You know that off field stuff, relationships and player connection etc. has an impact to onfield performance or you don't think it does?

Cotchins **** up was only going to cost the club $20k, which she offered to pay (25k was suspended). It was Stack and CCJ that had it accumulate up to $100k.

And yet Jack Riewoldt was just on Whateleys show and categorically stated in his opinion that the marriage breakup had zero impact on the teams performance. emphatically said it didn’t affect him at all as he thought it was a personal life situation that had nothing to do with how he nor others performed.

So does a number of other factors.Success = motivation(3 flags in 4yrs).Retirements.

Who gives a f@$k about Hardwicks marriage breakup honestly. I've known plenty of blokes who work 60+ hour weeks, married to stay at home wives with school aged kids, who don't clean their house, make terrible dinners, their lunches look pathetic because they made it themselves, their Mrs doesn't put out unless it's a birthday. They barely communicate.

These blokes are truly miserable but most try put on a brave face. Who's to say what Hardwicks marriage was like. News flash 60% of marriages end in divorce and there's plenty that stick together for the kids or other reasons that are completely miserable.

Royce Hart is an actual AFL Legend (something Cotchin will never be) people laugh about him being signed for a suit and a few shirts. Sad fact is he was so poorly paid that he had to sell all his memorabilia to pay for knee surgery because his knees were so bad he was housebound. He could've written a tell all book airing dirty laundry about Punt Rd instead but that would've been beneath him. A part from his initial 2 year rookie contract Cotchin has been one of the games highest paid players ever and the only reason he's added salacious bullsh1t in his book is to sell a few thousand more copies to gossip queen's who'd be better off watching Real Housewives than following footy.

He was pretty good at footy, that Cotchin. Lead us well. Shame the thread has devolved into a bitch fight about useless shit. Neither Hardwick, Cotch nor any of the alleged rifts are at the club anymore. Lets just grow a set and move on.

I've heard it didn't impact the players at all. They all root around.

Cotch says it impacted him though, as captain.

Maybe Cotch was just closer than the rest with family ties etc, I dunno.

I know it’s tempting to (want to) believe we could have been more successful without the Mrs Hardwick issue and that therefore there is a higher likelihood with the issue gone and Yze on board that things will turn around quickly.

But we won 3 flags in 4 years. How often do teams do better than that. Our best players got to 30 and started getting injured. Most of our best players probably lost a bit of hunger. I am going to believe all of that caused the last three years of mediocrity not Mrs Hardwick (even if it created some internal issues) And that means the turnaround may not be quick.

Cotch is known to be very straight edged
I know he doesn’t drink and has never been one to party either
So wouldn’t be a surprise if he has strong family values and is more of the exception in a footy club environment

With my own personal experience around footy clubs a guy getting a divorce after shacking up with a younger woman wouldn’t be very polarising as crass as it seems

Only one season where he was in the top 3 paid at the club , where he was the 3rd highest . Stop talking shit .

Is there some commonly held belief that Dimma didn’t take a pay cut when footy dept salaries were chopped across the board?
Covid cuts were quite open and transparent but there seems to be a narrative that Hardwick didn’t get cut.
Not my understanding.

Think you have to pretty naive to think it wouldn't affect performance to a certain degree. Between 2017-2020, what I believe to a fairly wank term 'Richmond man' has been used repeatedly by our players and coaches. Now what makes a 'Richmond man' who really ****ing knows but you can sure as hell bet that cheating on your missus of 20 plus years whilst being the senior coach wouldn't fall under that banner. A group that is built on trust, vulnerability and family to then have a senior coach delivering those same messages it doesn't have the same meaning/effect.

Yep, agree. Hardwick ****ed the team ethos with his behaviour. The head coach has to be flawless in setting example for others to follow.
