“The closer the collapse of the Empire, the crazier its laws are.”
― Marcus Tullius CiceroIt was rumoured the Roman Emperor Caligula was so enamoured by his horse Incitatus, that he gave him a seat on the Roman Consul. Commodus the son of Marcus Aurelius was a cunning manipulator who mastered the art of bread & circuses to his own advantage. He was known to personally enter the gladiatorial arena and engage in do or die, hand to hand combat. However, there was a small catch. All his opponents were severely handicapped & incapacitated before they entered the ring, making it impossible for him to lose.
Dictatorships aren’t always recognised, especially in there formal stages. in fact some are welcomed with wide open arms for the initial relief and satisfaction they bring. Take for example the most infamous dictator of modern times, a vegetarian, animal lover named Adolf Hitler, who single handedly pulled Germany out of a hyper inflationary nightmare, and had a major input in the origins of VW. Before WW2 commenced, German citizens enjoyed one of the highest standards of living in all of Europe. But like all dictatorships past & present, they eventually collapse upon themselves.
If you read the accounts of people who lived under Eastern European communism, you will often hear words like lifeless, joyless, unhappiness, hopelessness, powerless etc to describe the horrors of day to day life. You could mount a strong case that these catatonic emotions are now experienced by most Port supporters on a weekly basis.
And now to the elephant in the room itself, the one our President refers to as the ‘little battler club from Alberton’. The man with an ego as big as the Grand Canyon, has entrenched himself on the throne & claimed himself emperor. A figure who was once championed by the Port faithful, is now ruthlessly mocked & despised. Like all Dictators before him, it’s almost impossible to garner an admission of guilt or wrongdoing from his lips. While the people starve for a lack of bread, he tells them to eat cake. The one affectionately known as Kochie, is nothing more than a power obsessed, self serving despot who would rather burn the city to the ground, than honourably fall on his own sword.
However, dictatorships cannot function of themselves, they require ardent loyalists, who often share the same traits as their beloved leader, but normally lack the intelligence and ruthlessness to succeed in such a role. Enter Ken Hinkley, a very unlikable, bottom feeding parasite who is all about self-preservation & protecting his own interests at all costs. He’s a loathsome individual who would betray anyone deemed threatening to his own self interests. The type of guy who would steal a fruitful idea from a colleague, and claim it as his own.
“The closer the collapse of an empire, the craziest its laws are”. The decision to select Rozee is a perfect example that the regime is on its last legs.
