noobermensch does an incredible job with these videos and can't thank him enoughIn case people haven’t seen, each of our three main draftees has at least 3-4 YouTube videos of 4-6 minutes each featuring vision from different Coats Talent League games. The beauty of this is that these clips show basically all possessions and involvements (eg marking attempts, tackles, hit outs) from those matches, even missed shots on goal, I.e. not just highlights. Having watched all of these available, I’m even more pleased with our picks but most impressed by Moraes.
Whitlock has a lot of shots on goal and I’m not surprised that his conversion is as low as the quoted 36%. He misses a lot of set shots from 45m out or further. Much better from closer in but in the vision I’ve seen many of his goals come from free-play, eg snaps. Whitlock gets a lot of possession upfield and is pretty proficient below his knees. From what I could tell he must have spent a fair bit of time in the ruck this year. He looks like a competitor to me, and someone who has different components to his game to have a high ceiling both as a forward and second ruck.
The videos I’m speaking about have been uploaded by “Footy Stuff” who has done an incredible job. The same user posted a very thoughtful and detailed pre-draft analysis of rankings of the first round and by position. Would strongly recommend as the discussion is another level of sophisticated insight. Their first round rankings are broken into tiers and go down to pick 18.
Draper was their number 1. Murphy Reid was rated highly, as was Hannaford. Trainor was the highest ranked tall with Lalor, Tauru, Travaglia and Langford all rated lower than on other lists.
None of our guys were ranked top 18. Although in the positional rankings for outside the top 18 players, Berry was #1 of remaining small forwards; Whitlock #3 of remaining tall forwards after Armstrong and Shanahan but before Faul; Moraes #1 of remaining mids ahead of Gross, Ough and Ben Camporeale. Matt Whitlock’s athleticism was described as being higher than Jack’s.
