Any chance of targeting Max King. Looks unhappy playing under Ross Lyon, might like the idea of living near his twin brother and some sun.
Would be nice to have a tall in the forward line that is capable of giving an honest areal contest and taking the odd mark.
Rayner is a forward. He should only pinch hit in the middle. He gives a stronger contest in the air than either Eric or Joe and is good at getting first hands on it and creating for others. I think the forward line functions well when Cam is the third tall. Maybe that is simply what he is...
Midfield were flogged all dn madeay. Was Neale's shoulder right?... not sure. If he was crook, he shouldn't have played..or sub should have been made earlier.
The only role Gunston can play is replacing Daniher or Hipwood if they get injured. If they play him at the expense of Robertson or Ah Chee, they are changing a winning formula and will be tempting fate.
To play a bloke after 6 weeks with no match practice, whose place in the side was...
Agree. Interesting they scored 82 points from ground ball. This doesn't happen when Gunton is in the side as he can no longer compete at ground level. We are better as a unit without him.
We clearly need another inside mid to play Ashcrofts role. Lyons or Matho for me.
I think finding a spot for Sharp might be worth it also. His exceptional running ability will help with providing the extra number contest to contest and will help us run out games.
100% since Ashcroft went down we have been playing a midfielder short. Lyons is the closest thing to Ashcroft we have. Clean at stoppage, good decision making. With Gunston out, we should be able to cover his lack of leg speed.
I thought Charlie looked better with more space once Gunston...
Ashcroft is extraordinarily clean, Dev is not. That is why Dev cannot replace him. Lyons is a closer replacement as he is very strong at the contest and clean with his hands. Dev can run all day and is strong and should also be in the side.
I think we were fumbly around stoppage and have missed Ashcroft's clean hands the last couple of weeks. The player with cleanest hands (outside Neale) at stoppage is Lyons. I think our clearances would improve significantly with him in the side. Just a matter of whether his lack of run would...
Dev's problem is he is not a one touch player and double grabs. This is the most important skill an inside mid needs. I think he can be a very serviceable role player but will not be an A grader.
It isn't so much about playing 'well' or not. It is his absolute inability to chase, tackle or compete at all when the ball hits the ground. Each time the ball is kicked near Gunston, unless he marks it (rare), the ball is rebounded away with ease and an opportunity for a Cameron, Bailey...
This is what was happening before Gunston was brought back. The forward line looked cohesive and dangerous. Rayner competes really strongly in the air, knocks defenders over and is agile enough to keep his feet and then be dangerous at ground level. This brings the other smalls into the game...
Fagan's loyalty to guys like Zorko, Gunston, Berry is costing us.
He gave Zorko the opportunity to play inside mid to replace Ashcroft (even though at his best he was more outside). His lack of fitness has been obvious for weeks. Lyons is the obvious strong bodied inside mid who gets the ball...
Dev is not a one touch player. His hands are not clean enough. He is a hard worker and has good size, but is not up to that role. Wing or defensive mid rotation perhaps
Gunston is hit or miss. If he marks, great... but once it hits the deck he is a liability. I personally think the forward line was functioning better without him. He is incapable of second efforts or defensive pressure. Was a great player and still has some tricks, just not sure if that will...
My problem with Gunston is that when the ball is kicked to him (which happens a lot), it is all duck or no dinner. If he doesn't mark it, he is an absolute liability on the ground and cannot compete at all with any afl standard footballer and as a result, we get hurt badly the other way.
Fagan...
