Its more of a guideline than a hard rule (Hawthorn and Geelong have both gone 4 years without drafting 2 firsts in the past). Plus weve used 2 firsts in the last 4 years
6 and a future 2nd for 11, 23, 30 & 49 was the trade.
We had 1 first to start the trade period (the Butters pick). We got a second 1st for Wingard (The Duursma pick). We got a 3rd first for Polec/Pittard which we then used to upgrade up to 5 by trading in a bunch of 2nd and 3rd round picks.
Thats not entirely accurate. We got 11 for Polec/Pittard which we upgraded to 6 and then upgraded to 5. Technically we gave up Polec/Pittard and a coiple of 2nd and 3rd rounders to get to 5
Theres a fair bit of recency bias going on i reckon. Boak at his peak was only behind Gray as our best afl midfielder and his 2013 was only behind Treds as the best captains year in our afl era
Its not about stability or meandering along, its about knowing that filling your list with a dozen picks in the 70s and 80s isn't going to give us the neccessary talent or depth to compete.
Culling half your list in such a short space of time is a sure fire way to see us plummet down the ladder and likely not have acceptable replacements to ensure a successful rebuild.
And just on this point, we are more likely to see players look elsewhere if in 2-3-4 years time we still have Hinkley and still haven't made a GF. Players will look to leave for success.
In the end every coach has an end point. Hinkley is nearly 60, he hasn't made a GF, he's been coaching...
At what point does simply making up the numbers not become acceptable anymore? As a Hawthorn supporter would you be happy if Mitchell does not develop the results of the team any further than what we saw this year? How long would you accept being a finals also ran before you want change?

I disagree on the burst speed. He doesn't suit our forward line the way we play. It's quite possible he doesn't suit any forward line tbh, but, I think he does have the speed to play in an open forward line. Probably still wouldn't work though.
It's hard to see what to do with him next year.
