From the Brisbane website:
On the surface the Academy exists solely to provide draftable athletes to the AFL/W programs, however it is much more than that. As well as providing draftable talent, we also exist to keep the best talent in Queensland, to develop athletes to better the standard of...
Rivers has been officially announced (buried on https://www.afl.com.au/news/1223072/inside-trading-hawk-on-swans-radar-giant-weighs-up-new-home-saints-bolster-coaching-ranks). Wonder if one of Goddard or Harves will get parachuted into the Sandringham vacancy.
SAINTS ADD TO COACHING RANKS...
Pick 27 last year - was originally Gold Coast's future second rounder, traded to Adelaide in 2022 in a draft night pick trade, went back to Gold Coast as part of the Burgess deal last year. Funnily enough was then traded to us draft night and turned into Hastie.
Houston's a quality player but it's a classic case of "is the juice worth the squeeze". Is a high quality player in a position where we're already well stocked worth the one or two high draft picks, that's a no for me. Wrong age bracket, too high a cost, too little addressing of needs.
So I'm gonna guess
Pick 1 - Richmond takes Finn O'Sullivan
Pick 2 - North does a pick split with Gold Coast. North get 6 and multiple sweeteners (depending on what survives trades), GC get 2 and some lower order picks to help with the Lombard bid. Could be one of those pre-arranged trades at...
Think it was more a combination of perceived talent and belief we could hang onto him - he was high enough on our draft board that we would've taken him with our first pick had the dominoes fallen differently. After all we managed to hang onto Nas and pry academy product Henry out of Freo.
I'd really love us to try to pull off a Stocker style trade - talk to one of the top 4 about swapping firsts next year (so we keep a spot in the first round) and get their current first. See if anyone's counting on us to plummet - unlikely but possible
Happens more than you'd think in drafts, clubs decide they have a higher priority than a slider, especially when there's a big question mark. Joel Selwood, Brodie Grundy, Charlie Curnow, Tim English, Matthew Johnson, Daniel Curtain last year.
When I spoke to Schoey at a club function a month ago he said Ross is getting him to play more on smalls than talls - he's not seen as a third tall internally
It could've worked out brilliantly for us if we'd read the tea leaves successfully and picked up Grundy instead of Lee or Hickey.
It was a very average draft but overall we've done as well as anyone out of it - we scooped up Membrey and Mase from other clubs and got a little service out of...
We got lucky with Nas in that Mason Wood worked his magic to convince him to stay, he very easily could have already yoyoed back to SA. As the wise man says: Better lucky than good.
