I don't disagree with those sentiments at all. In the context of this season we were beaten by Brisbane and that's all there is to it. I meant it with regards to the overall quality of the 2 teams moving forward and our chances next year.
I agree they needed a break, but just one. The kids also needed it. Next year, having another seasons of games under their belt hopefully mitigates that.
I disagree. Lost by 10 pts against the now premier. We didn't play our best. I'd be confident playing them again. The only older players we rely on are danger, Cameron and Stewart. They've got 1 or 2 more seasons at the peak of their powers. We might squize a couple more out of blitz at full...
Who was he second to?
He was our leading goal kicker in 2010/11 and kicked roughly the same goals as Travis cloke across those 2 years. One of the best key forwards at the time.
Not only was he quick off the lead but was an exceptionally strong mark of the ball.
We don't even make it to the...
I have to disagree on Pods. He was absolutely NOT a role player. 2010/11 he kicked over 50 goals both seasons and provided so much more around the ground. He was one of the best key fwds in the league. He would have kicked 400 goals for his career if we drafted him at 24 instead of 28.
Our weakness in the midfield has been no different since the beginning of the year. The difference is that our intensity has dropped off a cliff these last 3 weeks (culminating in the Darwin game) which has led to a failure to execute our Plan A, one aspect being: Conceding we'll lose in the...
The same was said (including by me) that we'd fatigue in 2022...it didnt happen. Every side will fatigue as the year goes on.
I agree, there is a chance due to the nature of our age profile of old/young that we may tire more, however that isn't a forgone conclusion.
We also have contingencies...
I love your posts mate (despite erring on the side of caution mostly) but this level of pessimism is completely unsupported by anything our team has produced this year.
I suppose part of it is conditioning. Every Geelong team to win a flag this century have been a level above 95% of the opposition.
We haven't seen a so so Geelong premiership side (relative to other premiers) in the mould of a 2012 Swans, 2016 Dogs, 2018 Eagles.
That's not to say this 2024...
Judging by some of the comments in the autopsy thread, Geelong are the only team that has to go through the season undefeated to be considered a chance at the flag.
Yeah, that's totally fair and probably my bias slipping in. But I was confident at every point in the game we could comeback and win, despite how we were playing. They were obviously forcing us to play their low-scoring game and it worked this time. I just think we are capable of kicking a far...
Losses always burn but every teams drops one eventually. Not worried about this in the slightest.
We were clearly off our game. Weren't running as hard to cover the ground. Poor tackling intensity and unforced errors. Yet we still only lost by 8 pts. Dees couldn't have played much better...
It's already being setup with all the talk about the Blues injuries. If we win it'll simply be because Carlton weren't full strength and we roll onto the Melbourne game as being the true test.
Dwayne Russell just ranked us the 7th best team on the pretence of having played weak teams, whilst at...
I couldn't agree more. I mentioned in another thread that I think this year is more about the development of our younger players.
We are in a good position to recruit strongly this off-seasom to rebalance the list and contend again in 2025.
That being said, there are ways we COULD contend...
It does, but it was the midfield who performed better tonight. I agree though, the midfield is our weakest line and it remains to be seen how they fare against better opponents.
Atkins was huge in the 3rd qtr. He just willed himself to every contest and won the ball.
Forward line didn't function properly for most of the night. Lots to work on there.
It's for this reason I'm focusing on the development of our younger players this season. I think with the imminent retirement of 5-6 of our older brigade this off-season we have a chance to recruit strongly in that 24-28 bracket and rebalance the list. If we do that, I think we contend next year.
