I think you’re right unfortunately.
“We could just develop our game and and sit in the bottom half of the ladder and say we're building, or we can try and perform and compete against the best."
We need to finish bottom 4 for the next 2 years then hope Bewicks star keeps rising.
This year we’ll end up taking 2 first rounders because of the nga.
That’s 4 drafts in total of top end talent.
That’s how we should orchestrate the rebuild.
McGrath’s time line at any other club compared to ours would make interesting reading.
Pick 3 by Legit FC.
1st year played as attacking hb.
Developed as mid in year 2 & 3.
Club identity he is a panic merchant that avoids contact.
Back to attacking hb in year 4 & 5.
Club realise he’s not...

Hawthorn place a greater emphasis on taking calculated risks to keep the ball moving compared to us.
There is nothing wrong with prioritising a conservative approach to moving the ball given our deficiencies in the...
Conservative coach, selections & gameplan.

Best of the bottom 8/10 is this teams floor, unfortunately it’s also their ceiling.
However, it does means the gap between our best & our worse is decreasing.
Hopefully Brad is on top of all of this.
What if all of Collingwood, Footscray, GWS & Hawthorn end up making the top 8 by the end of the year.
That would be 4 wins against top 8 sides this year.

So in this alternate universe Essendon have;
Wins against 5th 7th & 8th
Losses against 1st & 2nd
Draw against 4th
Haven’t played 3rd & 6th
Sweet.
I don’t believe Essendon is ahead of Carlton but like you said things can change quickly in this day and age especially in a competition thats trending towards becoming more of a week to week league.
Carlton are in the 9th year of their rebuild.
Essendon are in the 4th year of their rebuild.
Injuries and schedules aside Carlton should be clearly ahead of Essendon on just that basis.
