The good
No new injuries!!!
Harrison developing very nicely. Pressured the whole game. He’s not losing his spot no matter who is coming back.
Yet another incredible game by Nick.
Herculean effort by Moore. And Maynard.
We did very well in the first and third quarters despite the outs.
New...
With TJ being named emergency, is this the first time we’ve seen one of last year’s draft class in the mix?
That kind of thing used to happen all the time (I remember once we named two recent draftees in a round 1 game)
Under the Fly regime that kind of thing doesn’t happen unless you’re Nick...
ps. The protocol states 12 day min. That assumes that players are able to pass each step in the protocol without delay (eg: being symptom free).
I guess that hasn’t been the case.
Pop Quiz:
(1) How many times were Collingwood players dropped from selection due to injury in the 7 games in rounds 0 to 7 inclusive?
(2) How many times were Collingwood players dropped from selection due to injury in the 5 games in rounds 8 to 12 inclusive?
If we win this it’ll be a testament to our resilience …
… at least four forced changes this week (out Cox, Mihocek, Pendlebury, Richards),
Five changes last week
Two changes the week before that
Four changes the week before that
In Sydney, it’s a status / demographic thing. It’s why Swans couldn’t get out of Stadium Australia quick enough. All their supporter base is contained in eastern suburbs + inner west + northern beaches.
Whining about being a Premiership player …
… gee, he’s come along way from being pick 13 in the rookie draft barely three and a half years ago.
Stay humble Jack.
Going by round 12 injury update:
Round 12 v WB at Docklands

Howe is expected back (if gets through training)
Round 13 v Melb (King’s Birthday) at MCG

Earliest Elliott will be back
Earliest Eyre will...
Feel free to pull any positive rumours out of any cesspit you desire (I heard that Harley Reid is trying to get to Collingwood!!)
It’s the negative ones you need to take care with
For exactly the same reason clubs defend their players when they do something dumb.
You’ve got to support them in public. But that doesn’t stop you from reading them the riot act behind closed doors.
“Wasting time” isn’t just about teams using the game clock to their advantage. It’s also about running the game to schedule for the broadcasters, public transport, ground staff who are working, fans not wanting games to go on forever.
If having the clock stopped meant it wasn’t possible to...
(a) Why pick on an umpiring call? There were plenty of examples where the game was decided by our own screw-ups that were within our control.
(b) There were plenty of umpiring decisions that went in our favour over the course of the game.
It’s an imperfect game by design.
The ball is oval. It’s (usually) played under whatever weather conditions nature dishes up. Sometimes it’s played in the daytime, other times at night.
But no matter what random element gets thrown in - including the umpires and their rule interpretations...
We didn’t draw Friday night’s game because of the umpires. We drew it because of dozens of mistakes made by our own players - which we’ll learn from.
And that’s a good thing, because we can learn from and control our own behaviours. We can’t change a thing about the umpires apart from what...
Umpires need to make a kazillion black and white interpretations of a game that’s got so many shades of grey.
Sure, sometimes the umpires make a contentious black and white call out of a shade of grey. But the AFL quite reasonably aren’t going to hang their umpires out over those. Especially...
The clubs always stick up for their players (unless it’s irrefutable)
The AFL always stick up for the umpires (unless it’s irrefutable). They have to. Nobody else does. They need to recruit them at all levels. They need retention at all levels.
Fortunately for us, you could say that about 6 of our small forwards at the moment (Harrison, Richards, Hill, McCreery, Schultz, and Elliott)
Somebody has to get left out when Elliott comes back. Hard to imagine it’s Elliott because his scoreboard impact is so much higher than the others ATM.
