Play Nice AFL Womens - General Discussion

Whereas the Sam Mitchell example was a commonplace occurrence? I think not. The AFL has done both. This would be a worthy discussion if the VFLW sucked. But it doesn't. Likewise the other state leagues around the country are producing good results.

A statement easy to disprove on a team-by-team basis. Last year's premiers, for instance: key players like Ash Riddell and Ruby Tripodi put in years at state league level before getting drafted. And they didn't do it because of VFLW match fees. They did it because of the lure of an AFLW contract.

They do want it. So maybe we should judge the system by its results, rather than based on some imagined doomsday scenario.

NO TROLLS Is AFLW profitable yet

Last H&A season was $15 entry for adults, up from $10 the year before. But there were also 76k AFLW members (typically cost $75) with matchday access. Grand Final was $35 for adults and $5 for juniors, up from $20 for adults and free for juniors the year before. No discount for AFLW members...

Better money in local women's football than at state league level? That is not happening. Please, let's be serious... https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-02-18/kyneton-womens-team-widespread-mistreatment-across-state/104945784 Fact is the 540 AFLW contracts currently offered will expand to 570 in...

    2024 McClelland Trophy

It was 11 of 17 last year, and it's 12 of 17 this year. Very close to the imbalance of the men's fixture now.

    2024 McClelland Trophy

Last year AFLW teams could only earn about 96% of the points an AFL team could. This year it's equal, meaning AFLW performance is even more heavily weighted than in 2024. Quite rightly.

That's what's happening. In part because of the AFLW contract incentive.

$35m in AFLW player payments last year grows to $41m this year. About $43m next year, and so on. Nobody is asking amateur footballers to toil away in the 2s. The incentive to perform well at state league level and get on an AFLW list next year (min. salary $70,030) speaks for itself, much...

Game Day North Melbourne Football Club AFLW - Season 2024 Premiers - First EVER (AFLM/W) UNDEFEATED PREMIERSHIP SEASON - The Invincibles

They won the flag in March 2019, then did their re-signings in April 2019. The earliest we started hearing of this new Wuhan bat virus as a vaguely realistic threat was Jan 2020 when the AFLW pre-season was in practice match stage. Adelaide 2019 and North Melbourne 2024 have been the two most...

Game Day North Melbourne Football Club AFLW - Season 2024 Premiers - First EVER (AFLM/W) UNDEFEATED PREMIERSHIP SEASON - The Invincibles

Adelaide brought back all their premiership players from 2019. Only other AFLW instance of it happening. Didn't come very close to getting them all on the park at the same time again though.

Port Melbourne and Essendon not paying their VFLW players means they're just like nearly every other club. Furthermore the opportunity to test one's self, and learn by competing, against AFLW players is an attraction for state league footballers rather than a deterrent.

2025 Non AFL Attendance, TV, Finance etc

An unfortunately easy task for the NRL to convince its core following that the pursuit of equal opportunity is, at best, a low priority. The reason Melbourne aren't 1 of the 2 new teams in the now 12-team NRLW is because rugby league honchos don't want to spend money on relocating female...

Lack of talent in Melbourne and PNG doesn't seem to be getting in the way of men's NRL teams though, does it?

2025 Non AFL Attendance, TV, Finance etc

The ARLC more concerned about men in NZ, UK, PNG and Vegas than Australian women. Still not the slightest whiff of a Melbourne Storm NRLW team btw.

Women's game to be staged during men's Gather Round?

Another thought I had (in addition to the one which keeps getting inexplicably deleted, wherein I posit it's wrong to assume a player availability issue) is that the not-for-profit AFL (which made a $45m profit last year) ought to be providing indigenous women opportunities equal to that which...

Less than 2 months until Gather Round, and we haven't heard anything about AFLW involvement. I guess the ship hasn't sailed yet, but something would probably be announced within the next month if there are serious plans in place. Meanwhile we continue to get meaningless articles like this...

GWS is the AFL's biggest problem - not North, GC, or Tassie

St Kilda have sold games to Launceston, New Zealand and China in that time. Moved HQ twice. Now heavily rely on the AFL gifting them home MCG games vs big Melbourne clubs. Found themselves in crippling debt precisely because they couldn't manage to secure successful longterm partnerships like...

Football talk only in here pls. She wouldn't get a game or another contract if she "simply got fewer uncontested possessions". Therein lies the issue of singling out a player and comparing her to a different kind of player using stats from one season while ignoring a bunch of other seasons...

You singled out one of the players, so I talked about the player, and then you said I was fixated on her. It wouldn't be precious of me to reiterate the idea of a football forum is to give opinions about the performance of players and teams etc, not psychoanalyse other members of the forum...

Even if it was just based on 2024 (it's not), O'Shea still had a higher contested possession rate, which supports my point about her contest work. That's the whole premise of the thread. A premise which you seem fine with when it's applied to 107 other players (and also when I did it with Vikki...
