I'm old enough to remember when after their first season, plenty thought:
Cox was going to be a better player than Blicavs
Perkins would be a gun big bodied mid
Stringer was telling the world Z. Reid was the best of the lot
And Jones played well enough that random fans regularly confused him as...
I'd probably just have Merrett (who already is elite), Ridley if we let him play as a general defender rather than key, Martin if he is moved up the ground, and maybe Caddy.
Some of our other names (Langford, Redman, Durham, Caldwell, Draper) are capable of being good to very good but won't...
I could be wrong, but Nguyen strikes me as someone we should start in a forward half role. From what i've seen of him, he's super competitive, has a go, very quick, and creative. But you just can't have general defenders who are prone to mistakes by foot.
I'd look to give him a pretty simple...
I would say Michael Hibberd being good enough to be head hunted by another club who offered more cash, and then becoming an all australian + premiership player is a [very Borat voice] great success.
If we could draft a couple of Michael (not Mitch) Hibberds this year it would be an awesome result.
I don't see it this way at all. The club doesn't want him and hasn't really hidden that. GWS is the only team that has strongly considered taking him off our hands.
Realistically we can't ask for much because we don't want him.
I think, based off contract lengths, the locks are:
B: Ridley McKay McGrath
Hb: Redman ... ...
Imo, McGrath's best suited to focusing on the defensive end and handling the gun opposition small forward, rather than attacking. He needs to step up too when it comes to setting up our backline...
If you look at Hawthorn's backline, Frost has cut down on the constant mistakes he built a reputation for because he seems to now understand he doesn't need to create any more. He's surrounded by good kicks and users of the footy in Sicily, Scrimshaw, Hardwick, Impey, Amon, and Weddle etc...
Personally hate that he's spending as much time deep forward as he is, but I think his play in general is showing good signs of late. Is making better decisions more regularly and when he has a realistic chance, he's taking grabs more often than he used to.
Laverde, McKay, Kelly, (tonight Weideman, but give or take the usual Cox, Heppell, etc) is just a mix you cannot run with in your back half.
Your backline mix should have more good/composed users of the footy than not. It's a massive area to fix for next year.
I don't want to pile into a young player who is very clearly struggling, but they're actually doing him a disservice by playing him.
They have to turn to another option next week.
Continues to improve. He had developed a bad habit of using his left when he didn't need to and nearly did it in the fourth quarter while in the back pocket when we were under the pump.
But he stopped himself, got back on his right and found Merrett (I think?) with a really precise, important...
I've reached the point with this sick joke they're playing on us about Menzie where i am somehow grateful they only gave him a one year extension and not six.
They did just change the rookie rules so that players no longer have to be promoted or delisted after three years; it's now up to five. Can't stay on the rookie list though if they've played more than 10 games by the end of their fourth season.
So Tex can be kept on the rookie list next year if...
