Yes, due to the network’s commitments in Tokyo, Seven has opted not to broadcast Sunday afternoon AFL during the Olympics period, so Fox does all Sunday games. I wonder who Fox will get for the 2 weeks of Sunday games.
Reading the Herald Sun today...." The opening bounce of the Magpies-Power clash has been brought forward 35 minutes, to 7.15pm, because of the Olympic Games opening ceremony, while all Sunday games in rounds 19-20 will be exclusive on Fox due to Seven’s Olympics coverage." is that right?
That's correct. Back in 2009 they had Collingwood v Essendon, then a game in York Park then one in Subiaco. And in 99, they had Adelaide v. Sydney in the same window as Collingwood v Essendon. I think that SA and NSW got the Adelaide v. Sydney match while everywhere else got the Collingwood...
ABC has a bit of an advantage- they can use local commentators for
Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane matches; Alister Nicholson, Matt Clinch, Kelli Underwood and Joel Peterson call Melbourne and (I think)
Sydney games. Occasionally someone like David Lithgow or Dury Forbes does a match at Hobart or...
In America, they are very careful about showing more than one replay of horrific injuries.
I wish Seven and Fox Footy would learn from the American channels on how to handle injuries like that.
Lyon has *always* been a great analyst. He and Dunstall are great at pointing out things during matches. In fact Lyon and Chief are the best ones around. ABC has a few like Stan Alives and Mark Maclure.
As far as calling the game action, Bruce, Huddo, Dennis, Gerard Whateley, Tim Lane and Karl...
Since this question hasn't come up, was the fear of upsetting the country and metropolitan football leagues the reason we never saw a SCG game on Saturdays or even a Saturday game at the Gabba or in Perth or Adelaide?
What i meant to say is now FOX has 4 games to produce(1.40, 3.20, 4.35, and 7.25 or 7.40pm) on Saturdays, hence the need for extra callers. that's where Matt Garland and Bret Phillps would be used. Last year, they did a game on the week when a 5.10pm game was played on Saturday.
With FOX getting a 4th game, i wonder who FOX would use? Matt Garland and Bret Phillps seem to be the best bet, but Karl Langdon or Drew Moprhett could be considered. Tony Leonard from 3AW could be another choice too.
If Gerard Whatley goes to 7, who replaces him on ABC? Clint Wheeldon? Do they get Nicolson to do FNF? or do they move Matt Clinch to Melbourne and have him do FNF?
I've seen ABC do that a lot. the Tigers/Swans game when Sam Lloyd kicked that goal after the siren, Peter Walsh did that game with Kelli Underwood. Michael Maney(who works for Southern Cross in Tassie) did the WCE/GWS game when Nic Naitanui kicked that goal just before the siren.
