You are far more forgiving than I am, then. Screw up one of our all-important top 10 picks and and don't bother to understand our list configuration = a massive fail in my books
Smilie is a no brainer, then he picked a tall forward (we have King, Sharman, Caminiti, Owens), a forward ruck (we already have Keeler and Heath developing in that role) and a key defender (fine if we pick up several quality mids as well, which he didn't). Ignored Hofmann and Cole. I'd say...
Bonner was a waste of a list spot though. We had zero need for him unless you had the misguided belief that Sincs is a mid. I think we were worse as a team with Bonner a liability in the HB role with Sincs playing as an average mid instead of elite HB.
Do we need marking forwards?
King
Sharman
Caminiti
Owens
Keeler
My ideal scenario there is Caminiti goes to defence and Keeler (or even Heath) plays as third tall forward/backup ruck, rotating with Marshall. If neither of them are up to it, Caminiti stays forward and plays that role.
Cole...
Blues fans seems to think lack of leg speed and average disposal were reasons for his delisting. Seems like he's decent on the inside but not a great runner and can't play anywhere else. Also not much of an accumulator, even when not played as sub. I'm getting Shane Birss vibes.
Agree with all of this. I don't know why we needed another "solid citizen" type with no outstanding traits and some clear limitations. I'm also thinking this might mean they are going to target Tauru/Trainor/Armstrong/Dodson types in the draft while ignoring the plethora of mids who all clearly...
No chance St Kilda takes 1 mid and 3 talls with those picks. We already have King, Sharman, Caminiti, Owens and Keeler as tall forward options. We have no young mids on the list outside of Phillipou, Windhager and Garcia. We need a strong batch of young mids in this draft who will be ready to...
Reid looks quicker than his opponents on the field because he's thinking faster than them and disposes of the footy quickly. I think he's a no brainer if available at our picks.
Going by all the speculation, it seems like this could be on the cards:
Richmond - Lalor
North - Tauru
Carlton -...
Why wouldn't we take 2 mids? Our young onballer stocks are Phillipou, Windhager and Garcia. Dow and Clark are in their prime but are supporting cast rather than main characters. Then we have Steele, Macrae and Jones all around 30. Ross was axed and Crouch is about to be forced into medical...
I'm getting this vibe from Reid as well. Ball magnet, slick hands, great decision maker, hits the scoreboard....but isn't the prototype Aidan Bonar style athlete that everyone is looking for...
I'm thinking Sam Mitchell with Reid. Pure footballer. Pair him with Smilie and we've gone a long way...
I think you're correct here, and I believe we did offer him one year but would not extend for two. Membrey has been a great servant but looked cooked this year prior to the final 5-6 weeks, when he really turned it on and played some good footy. We have Owens and Sharman set to replace Membrey...
I'm much more interested in trading our future first for a pick in the teens this year. Take two elite mids and then grab the best available like a Lindsay/Travaglia/Allan/Armstrong type. That's three high percentage shots at adding long-term best 22 players.
I'm leaning towards Smilie and Reid being my preferred outcome. A 195cm clearance brute and a classy accumulator, both of whom will hit the scoreboard. They're also a solid chance of simply being the two best available players who just happen to fit our needs perfectly. If someone takes Reid...
I feel like selecting our first two picks is very simple. Take whoever is available out of
O'Sullivan
Draper
Smith
Lalor
Langford
Smilie
Reid
Lindsay
Those are the top 8 mids excluding academy picks. We have picks 7 and 8. So get two of them
We still have no idea where Pou's ceiling is. He was struggling big time this year before going back to the VFL to work on his game and then averaged 22.5 disposals, 6.5 tackles, 4.3 clearances and a goal a game over his last 4 matches. Looking forward to seeing what he can do with renewed...
Seems a good fit for St Kilda, and his story reminds me of Liam Stocker. High expectations as a draftee, didn't deliver and tank was an issue. Getting delisted and being given another chance lit a fire under him and is now best 22. I'd prefer to take DGB than a one-season fill in like Tomlinson
What an absolute farce. The AFL has literally appointed themselves as the comedy police.
Do I think the costumes or skits sound funny? No, but a bunch of guys having a private function and not harming anyone is not of public interest. If they found it funny, good for them.
Definitely worth a trial after a full pre season in that role. I feel like his ceiling is around Levi Casboult level as a forward. Good mark, terrible kick, not the most natural forward. His size and athleticism could potentially be best utilised in defence, and there will always be a...
So after the trade period, this is our list of contracted players (I'm excluding Crouch at this point)
Seniors
B: Wilkie, Howard, Webster
HB: Sinclair, Caminiti, NWM
C: Hill, Steele, Wood
HF: Higgins, Sharman, Henry
F: Butler, King, Owens
Foll: Marshall, Mickroy, Phillipou
Int: Windhager...
Very happy with the acquisition of Mukraié. He walks into the club and is instantly a starting onballer. With a good pre season and a shot of confidence he could even be our best mid if Steele doesn't regain his top form, though I suspect Maykrea will help elevate Steele if anything.
Victim of his own versatility IMO. Much like Battle early on - thrown forward, back, wing, sub. When allowed to settle up forward late in the season he thrived.
I disagree with the idea of splitting 8 into later picks - we need to collect elite talent while we can.
But I agree with your point on tall stocks being thin. Maybe we're planning taking the training wheels off and giving Keeler, Heath and Ari a serious crack in the seniors next year with...
Would've been fine as a dirt cheap Campbell replacement but not worth a material decline in our draft hand. Likely too one dimensional to be starting player with Marshall as well
I don't think you can really make an argument that King isn't injury-prone. He's played 83 games out of around 130 since he was drafted. He had an okay run from 2020-2022 but he's missed an entire year with an ACL and half of the past 2 seasons. He's a 24 year old running around with a...
