Ian Redpath was my first "favourite" cricketer, having been privileged to see him score 171 against the To and Froms and share a 219-run partnership with Greg Chappell (108) on the latter's Test debut, in Perth's inaugural Test in 1970.
Having read an entertaining recent interview with him on...
I agree, Boogyman, particularly the tribute to Taylor North who was an unsung player but a great club man (44 league + 87 reserves + 19 colts = 150 games all up).
Unfortunately, losing Mitch Crowden and Angus Schumacher to the SANFL is not ideal if we plan to go one better in 2025.
Jedd Edwards...
Welcome aboard, royboy 56.
To my knowledge, Brian Brown never captained Fitzroy's senior side, unless he filled in for one game.
However, even that would be very unlikely given the number of experienced players that were at Fitzroy during Brian's time there.
The boys were very focused and singleminded today, kranky al.
With a record 82 hitouts, Scott Jones was absolutely sensational.
However, I believe he was reported for rough conduct against Swans tagger Jehb O'Donoghue in the third quarter.
I didn't see the incident in question, but fingers...
I may well be mistaken, killer, but this looks like a scene from that brilliant Michael Palin series, Ripping Yarns, with the episode in question being "Tomkinson's Schooldays".
I never had the pleasure of meeting John Blackman, but loved his passion for Fitzroy and his marvellous sense of humour.
RIP John and condolences to your family.
I've just read that my favourite Fitzroy player, and the favourite of many other Royboys, Bernie Quinlan, has suffered a heart attack and was rushed to Frankston Hospital.
All the very best and get well soon, Superboot.
Yes, the Brisbane Lions is very much "Darcyville", with Darcy Craven being Darcy # 4, after Fort, Gardiner and Wilmot.
Darcy Craven is also the third former East Perth player at the Lions, after Brandon Starcevich and James Tunstill.
Jaxon Prior's father, Michael (ex-Essendon and West Coast...
Good luck to young Darcy Craven with the Brisbane Lions.
Darcy made a big impact in his three senior games for East Perth.
The Mighty Royals will miss him.
Who said the Fitzroy Lions were dead???
Fitzroy Lions 82.24 (516), Elizabeth Eagles 0.0 (0)
Three Lions - Josh Rosenthal (29), James Ellis (17) and Dylan Richardson (13) - shared 59 goals.
You've got to feel for the Elizabeth Eagles after such a belting, particularly given that it was a home...
Very sad news to have lost Ross Thornton well before his time.
It's testament to Ross's determination that he debuted with Fitzroy in 1980, five years after initially being rejected by the club.
Ross's career highlights would have to be winning the 1984 club best and fairest award, captaining...
I've just read on the Brisbane Lions' website that Les Hughson Jr passed away on April 4, aged 85.
Les (DOB: December 1, 1938) played 28 senior games for Fitzroy between 1958 and 1962 and was a nephew of the great Fred Hughson (164 games), who captain-coached the Roys' most recent senior...
East Perth for me since my long-ago Grade 1 days at Tammin Primary School.
My good mate then in Grade 2 supported the Mighty Royals, hence I followed suit (as you do when you're younger).
Alan Rose joined Subi from South Fremantle, but I'm unsure of his local club before becoming a Bulldog.
I suspect Mark Stewart joined the Lions from East Perth, given that he played 58 league games for the Royals between 1974 and 1978.
My records indicate that Stewart joined EP from St Kilda...
Emuboy, I can answer your first question.
The 2 players who spring to mind are Shane Zantuck and Daryl Cumming.
Zantuck played 5 games for North Melbourne (1974-76), 56 games for South Melbourne (1977-80) and 88 games for Melbourne (1981-86).
Cumming, who ironically played the bulk of his senior...
That's a great stat about ladder symmetry, emuboy.
The WANFL ladder after Round 11, 1972, had a magnificent symmetry.
1. Claremont 9-2
2. East Perth 8-3
3. West Perth 7-4
4. East Fremantle 6-5
5. Perth 5-6
6. South Fremantle 4-7
7. Subiaco 3-8
8. Swan Districts 2-9
Coincidentally, after each...
Dreadfully sad news and condolences to Matt Rendell's family.
Echoing previous sentiments, Matt was far too young.
The first game I saw Matt play was when he kicked 7 goals in our 69-point win over South Melbourne at the Junction Oval in Round 4, 1981.
Rest In Peace, Matt, and thank you for the...
I've just read that Matt Rendell is critically ill after suffering a severe heart attack.
I'm sure the Fitzroy family and the football community at large hope that Matt can overcome this severe health threat and return to full health.
Keep fighting, Matty and the Rendell family...
I don't know the value of WAFL clubs' salary caps, but I think they'd need to be significantly higher to attract more VFL and SANFL stars to WA.
And that would largely depend on the WAFC opening its purse strings given that most clubs are just "hanging on" financially.
Peel Thunder have at least...
You make some good points, dinnaz, but I don't necessarily think the standard of footy is poor (just my opinion).
I agree with you about Subiaco's dominance, but Claremont hasn't won a flag since 2012.
In that time, Subi has won 5 flags, Peel Thunder and West Perth have won 2 each, and South...
A tremendous performance by the Royal Blues at Leederville yesterday.
Many of us thought that at some point West Perth would mount a significant challenge.
Yet, the only time the Falcons did manage to kick consecutive goals was just before time-on in the last quarter when the game was all but...
To be honest, Andrew, I've been flat out with work and haven't had time to read Bob Beecroft's book.
It doesn't help that I'm addicted to buying cricket and footy books and most of them - including Bob's book - unfortunately gather dust.
I also have copies of Russell Holmesby and William...
Based on Subiaco's strong win over Claremont yesterday, Mighty Eagles, last week's victory has added merit.
Regards last night's trip to Lathlain Park, I saw it as a real danger game because sooner or later Perth will show the benefit of Peter German's coaching.
However, another powerful opening...
Any win's a good win, Mighty Royals, particularly being on the right side of the ledger in a one-point game in Round 1.
Very proud of the way the boys fought back after looking down the barrel early in the last quarter.
However, we certainly made things very hard for ourselves after a poor third...
A left-field idea, but that would be fantastic if it happened, AJML.
I'm a member of the Fitzroy Reds in the VAFA, have a lukewarm interest in the Brisbane Lions and am passionate about East Perth in the WAFL.
When it comes to rugby league, I nominally follow Parramatta and Penrith and support...
