Most will start with a plan for integrating but the lower end Ressies players think they’re too good for Friday night footy. Although probably not in the best 12+
A few years ago, might have been the half year after Covid, Ferny Grove did a last minute gather with Mavericks. Not sure how successful it was but it got them a team that year. Having some surety is important but also having some flexibility for these matters may be required again for this season.
I think Ormeau are Gold Coast also.
As I understand Southport and Pac Pines are looking at 2nd sides as well. Where do their 2nd sides play? They can’t push to Brisbane South to make it approaching 20 teams.
Central south will have 15 or more teams if 3 teams get the 2nd sides up. Seems too many. It’s still a massive drive between Fernvale and Victoria Point.
The Academies are fantastic for QLD footy. Just some tweaks with graduating player expectations in the categories below the top quartile that Miller has described
I simply cannot understand why any 19 year old would be coming back to play this years 18 year olds. Have a cut off and that’s that. Then as Briztoon states those guys who missed the draft can train/play with the VFL if the AFL club still is keen.
Where does Southport stand in all this?
I understand the need to present certainty in player numbers to ensure a new team will prevail for the season ahead however it cannot possibly take 4 months to perform a fixture.
How do teams know if they’ll get the numbers in December? Wouldn’t the best way to maximise numbers is allow clubs to see what numbers are like in Feb/Mar?
True. But what stops a Saturday club playing any number of Ressies in their Friday night team if they have a Saturday bye?
More importantly tell me these teams don’t play each other in the same comp.
Well to be honest Freddy it could work very well for the initial reduction to 10 with the current 13 battling off for the QAFL status, with 3 to drop to Div 1 in 2026 and then maintain a constant pressure on those clubs above in QAFL to produce what AFLQ calls its “flagship” competition.
I’m not sure why “Mr/Mrs AFLQ, we have 60-70 players that we haven’t stolen from other clubs. Can we please have a 2nd team?” isn’t a good enough reason.
I think there are potentially 5 in that category - Chooks, Eagles, Pac Pines, Southport and maybe Greater Springfield.
Pretty sure Coorparoo will look to double up again.
Very quiet on here about Redlands. Potentially 1 minute away from a Premiership (all congrats to Morningside who deserve their win but it was a small margin)
