Player Watch Welcome to Hawthorn : Jai “Duke” Newcombe - 2024 Peter Crimmins medalist

Outpolled the best player in the league last year.

Prediction Will the Hawks go a step further in 2025?

Well, it’s the new year, the season is only two months away, it’s our 100 year anniversary, how is everyone feeling about the coming season, overall? I just watched the replay of the EF, so I’m feeling pretty chuffed (and maybe that’s influencing my outlook). We were a poster off a prelim after...

    Best 22 for Round 0. 2025.

Weddle’s too good to start on the bench.
  4. Roddy

    Best 22 for Round 0. 2025.

With Lewis definitely and Calsh most likely not playing round one (or is there any update on the latter?), how likely is it that Sammy will throw Scaife (or maybe even Ramma) to the wolves in round one, or is a makeshift tall forward line more likely, taken from the likes of Chol, Gunners, Sic...

List Mgmt. Hawk's List Management for 2025

    Interesting....

Why has he only been used very sparingly in that role then? He’s about to enter his sixth season on our list.

Why would we need another non-KP forward option when we already have Ginni, Wiz, Punk, C-Mac, Dimma, Moore…..

It'll keep a lot of opposition coaches on their toes too.

Training 2025 Off-Season & Preseason reports and discussion

Thinking about this some more, we're going to have swingmen galore - Sic, as discussed, Weds can play back, forward, midfield, wing or ruck (!!), Battle can swing forward, Dimma can and most likely will swing forward at times, Gunners goes back, or at least used to, on a regular basis....it's an...

    Best 22 for Round 0. 2025.

Backline looks a smidgeon top-heavy. Apart from that, fine effort.

Training 2025 Off-Season & Preseason reports and discussion

I’m utterly fascinated as to how the coaches will use Sic this year. Especially in the light of our KPF issues. Swinging him pretty permanently into the forward line is a tantalising prospect, especially with the two B’s coming on board this year. But his value as a floating interceptor across...

There are serious openings in the key forward position at the moment, I wonder who's going to seriously put their hand up? Ramma's entering his fourth year in the system, maybe it's his time?

Has Ramma been training as a forward at all so far this pre-season?

List Mgmt. Hawk's List Management for 2025

Calsher will become our Charlie Curnow, big, strong and athletic without being an absolute gorilla, and capable of kicking 50+ a season, ultimately.

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn : Calsher Dear! Rising star nom!

Stress-related injuries can be tricky. I think it’s safe to say his pre-season will be restricted at least.

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn : Calsher Dear! Rising star nom!

No one’s ‘pinning their hopes’ on Calsher. I for one am just disappointed for the young man that he’s suffered a setback so early. I’m sure others are the same. Even if he does get up for round one, he’ll be underdone without a proper pre-season. And in the light of our best key forward...

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn : Calsher Dear! Rising star nom!

Every one of those is less proven as an AFL key forward than a one-season teenager….

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn : Calsher Dear! Rising star nom!

Seriously, key forward is the position we could least afford to lose someone from. 🤦‍♂️ 🤦‍♂️
  20. Roddy

Prediction Will the Hawks go a step further in 2025?

Weds is already arguably the most versatile player in the game. Can LITERALLY play in any position on the field.
  21. Roddy

Training 2025 Off-Season & Preseason reports and discussion

I feel like the one and only area of concern is key forwards. The backline is starting to resemble the Three Gorges Dam, the midfield has a ripping juxtaposition of class, run and grunt and has ever-growing depth as youngsters develop, and our small forwards are bountiful. Which leaves tall...
  22. Roddy

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn : Calsher Dear! Rising star nom!

His biggest concern is that he'll start coming onto the radar a lot more now, and with Mitchy still out for a while and Cholly just being Cholly, he may find himself drawing the opposition's best defender. That's why I'm keeping my Calsher expectations in check. 30-35 goals for him would be a...

Michael Warners article 04/12/24. How woke and hypocritical the afl has become.

Never, ever, ever take seriously anyone who unironically uses the word 'woke'.
  24. Roddy

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn : Calsher Dear! Rising star nom!

Yep, for 4,578th time, NO player should be judged before they've played at LEAST 50 games, and big blokes take even longer. I wonder how many more times we have to go through this....

    This, exactly this.

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn : Calsher Dear! Rising star nom!

I wonder if there’s been a goal total set for him for next year? I’m not expecting miracles, especially now he’ll be on opposition radars a little more. Slow and steady improvement is all we need from him. 25-30 would be awesome.

Just off-season chit-chatting mate, maybe you should climb back down off that high horse of yours….

Training 2025 Off-Season & Preseason reports and discussion

So, for tallish to tall backs we have: Weds, Frosty, Barras, Battle, Sic, Scrim, plus a couple waiting in the wings. Yeah we’re definitely gunna line up like that….
  29. Roddy

Training 2025 Off-Season & Preseason reports and discussion

Do we think Weds will set foot in the backline again, in an official capacity? I seriously don't think he's needed back there any more. In fact, he'd be wasted there. Time for him to seriously step up and become the gun we know he can be.
  30. Roddy

Training 2025 Off-Season & Preseason reports and discussion

Don’t forget, Chol is about to turn 28. Not that it’s impossible to have a renaissance in your late 20s moving into your 30s, but it’s less likely.
