Does anyone know his status? is he ontrack to be back for Round 1 next year?
I think Young is one of the most underrated Hawk player by opposition teams.
His long kicking over midfield zones was sorely missed last year, and I think he'll be a key in to our setup going forward.
Good point RE: Renouf, I agree that I judge him harshly. I guess all I want out of our rucks is to give an even contest, and not give free kicks away.
If the rucks break even, I am confident that Hawks can match any midfield in the competition.
I think that was the description Bruce McAvaney was looking for but couldn't find... :)
In all seriousness, using both Rioli and Burgoyne to 'break the lines' in the middle is what Im looking forward too. But he will need to get his 'tank' up and get stronger so his hammys can holdup for 22 games.
With all due respect to Simon Taylor and Brent Renouf, but the loss of Robbie Campbell will be the biggest hurdle for us to overcome to repeat 2008.
I love the 'unsocialble' football of the Hawks, but everytime I see Taylor or Renouf give away cheap frees, it me wonder why we didn't go for a...
More Outside mid, 1st receiver to use his pace and evasiveness.
I'd stick Junior Boy on one wing and the Junior Burger on the other, and watch Rough and Buddy kick 80+ goals each.
The best player doesn't necessarily have to be the captain, and vice-versa.
Vandenberg has been a terrific leader at Hawthorn, when the chips were down. Now suddenly we're up... let's just put him in the scrapheap?
What kind of message does send to the other players, and the other clubs...
Although I hate watching teams like Sydney and Adelaide "ice" games; I think it's an important team skill that the Hawks have yet to learn.
eg. With say 5 minutes left in the game, up 10 - 18 pts, Sydney are very good at chipping it short/sideways to eat away time. They will usually find a...
Franklin on the wing could be, a very viable option and something that AC could well think about in the future.
He could play that "Adam Goodes" role... especially if we have more than enough firepower up forward if the likes of Muston, Dowler and Thorp start coming through.
Food for thought.
Did anyone see, during the 3rd Quarter during the match today (for a brief moment anyway) .. Franklin v Tambling on the wing.
Interesting matchup... I mean, there's been a trend to put smaller players on KPP (AKA the Campbell Brown Experiment); but this was kind of novel.
The guys you mentioned above all had AFL sized bodies, and I wouldn't consider any of them small (unless the Matera you're talking about is Phil). He needs more muscle.... Ben McGlynn is probably the best example of a small frame but built solidly.
That draft was particularly kind to Hawthorn. It was a cosmic accident that we ended up with Franklin.
And I actually like Tambling - doesn't have an AFL body but his speed is what he should be utilising more, that'll come with confidence.
However, smallish midfielder/crumbing forwards aren't...
Honestly, I think O'brien is your best bet, with someone in the 'hole' to restrict the leading.
on a slightly off topic note, I reckon "Goldsack" is only second to "Roughead" for best pr0n star surnames in the AFL. <img>
IMHO... we probably have an oversupply of tall marking forward options. If... and it's a big if.... a guy like Judd was available, then something could be explored.
We'd have to give up someone good though... and I'd hate to say it, but the only justifiable trade I could see is Buddy for...
