    2010 Calder Cannons Discussion Thread

Didn't make the cut hey buddy? Sometimes, it's just because there are better players out there.

Cannons can't make a team up!

Totally inaccurate. Due to injury and EKC players unavailable due to school footy, the Cannons have promoted three of their U16 players who all played in the U16 Vic Metro team a couple of weeks ago. You'd want to keep an eye on these kids too. Ploughman (Woodend) is very good and O'Rourke...

    Xavier College

Edar 07, you mention that Xavier has a strong football infrastructure, better than most schools. They seem to have a revolving door of coaches recently. A few years ago they had John Kennedy, Stephen Silvagni, Shane Healy, Matt Hannebery, Ian Aitken and Neale Daniher there. All of those have...

    Best football school in Australia

Unusual response. They were certainly offered them by Haileybury and MGS a while back. We are talking about the same boys that play for Calder Cannons and live more than 50km away from St Kevins....

    Best football school in Australia

"too many young guys go there from year 10 after having developed their footy skills elsewhere." Country families quite often wait to Year 10 or 11 before sending their kids to boarding school due to cost or just waiting until their old enough to cope with a move like that. I think you're...

    Best football school in Australia

Quote from Midfield"from every aspect you can look at assumption in the best foot ball school" I'm pretty sure that Xavier leads you in the annual Fr Keenan trophy that you've played annually for over the past 30+ years. In fact, didn't you lose 5-6 in a row recently??? If you ask Ray...

    Best football school in Australia

Based on? Skevs have had 22 players drafted to the AFL. The five I mentioned have all had well over a hundred. It's great that SKC won the premiership last year, however they needed to purchase Liberatore, Wallis etc to do it. It's only been the last couple of years that they have been...

    Xavier College

I was hoping to get a response from someone without an agenda! Not too sure where to start with your comment there, but here goes... APS schools give out scholarships to various extent, Xavier is no exception. However, to suggest that they've been filling their sides with bought players is...

    Toughest mongrel in the APS

Well done! Nice way to fend off a moronic comment from someone missing a frontal lobe.

    Xavier College

For about three decades, Xavier was the benchmark of APS football winning nearly 20 flags through the 80s, 90s and early naughties... Last year was their worst finish (2nd last) since woodstock! It doesn't seem that long ago that they were vying for a top 3 spot against cashed up Haileybury...

    Best football school in Australia

It's an age old debate that rears it's head every year. The best school could be measured by many parameters... Premierships Golden Eras AFL draftees Depth of talent not just 1st XVIII Longevity in a premier competition There are schools that have ticked all of these boxes over the years...

Best catholic footy school for 09, predictions?

Salesian College Rupertswood is one Catholic school that should be considered along with Assumption, Xavier and De La as one of the big schools. They've won the past two flags in their league and if they win this years (currently undefeated) they will go into the CAS finals. With their current...

    Under 15 State Squad

Jono O'Rourke is a shoe in to make this squad. Plays 1sts for Salesian and in U16 Calder Cannons. Lightening quick and already 6 ft. Can hit a moving target at will. Next Cameron Bruce.

    APS Season 2009

Making generalised, personal comments really are very immature. The fact is there are good people at both schools. Saying 'Xavier will always be superior' or 'You are an embarassment to the APS' is pathetic. Put your dummies back in and consider this... There are very strong and positive...

    Herald Sun Shield 2009

Here's hoping De La do well in the ACC. They're a good team and always perform well there. St Bernards are a bit up and down but always a danger side if they can put it together.

    APS Season 2009

I like that Xavier continue to ignore the temptation of buying scholarship players like most other APS schools these days. Instead they are spending big on coaching, facilities and development. With Sam Mitchell coaching the midfield this year, they are surely going to have the edge -...

    Herald Sun Shield 2009

Hmmm, think you might be thinking of Salesian in Chadstone there buddy. Salesian 'Rupertswood' in Sunbury went unbeaten last year and won the flag in their region. You might recall such players as Nathan Buckley, James Kelly amoungst the players that went there. There are some decent TAC...

    Best football school in Australia

KPass, what you seem to miss is that APS schools play on Saturdays. The finals of the Herald shield clash in the last few weeks of the APS season. It is virtually impossible for them to schedule both competitions with the overlap. Xavier actually registered for the Herald Shield in 2006...

    Herald Sun Shield 2009

Keep an eye on Salesian College. They have a couple of past Vic Metro U15 players and have just poached Xavier's coach. Might be a surprise packet

    APS Season 2009

Melbourne Grammar are definately the team to beat. Many of their young recruits in '08 will be back again and they will be hard to stop. Brighton will depend on Watts, but let's face it - Melbourne need him more. Xavier have a similar issue with Hannebery at the Swans, however he will likely...

Ben Cousins - 12 days to go

Actually, that's not quite correct. When asked if they would entertain the idea of drafting Cousins, the club said it was UNLIKELY as they were focussing on youth. It would appear that objective has been ticked, with the Dons having the youngest list now. Word is Knights is very keen to get...

    Sam O'Sullivan

Sam O'Sullivan (SOS) is training with Melbourne prior to the pre-season/rookie draft. This kid could be the steal of the draft. Silky skilled, tallish midfielder from Xavier/Oakleigh Chargers - was gunning it when he was cut down injured. He is Luke O'Sullivans nephew and has a lot of pace...

    Casey Sibasado

Two reasons Mr 'I'll opt for the easy way out and be a Sceptic' 1. He actually hasn't played much top level junior football at all : 8 TAC, 4 N.T, 20 school 1st XVIII games. Add that up and you have an inexperienced, yet phenomenally talented prospect. He is probably a year behind many of...

    Casey Sibasado

I can't see him getting to the rookie draft. He is such a super key forward pick, I would be surprised if Melbourne, Richmond or Essendon didn't take him with their pre-season draft selection.

The 3 best and 3 worst performers of draft day

Ummmm, didn't it take you 40 years and several matching team handbags to win one. Didn't you also lose the unloseable GF a couple of months back? Good thing you pinched a Bomber to get you across the line!!!
  27. B

Who will you watch now your club didn't pick them up?

Hislop - he is a hard at it midfielder, exactly what we needed and Richmond must be rubbing their hands together. Rich - WTF!!! How could we skip him. Hurley will be great for us, but honestly, we do that all the time. FCS, we let Joel Selwood go to Geelong the pick after us!!! Dodoro has...

Who were you surprised didnt make it

How Casey Sibosado didn't get picked up inside the top 30 let alone the ND is beyond me. Star quality written all over him. As usual, looking for carbon copy athletes. This kid is a footballer. Smart, great hands, tall. Desperately hope the Bombers land him.:thumbsu:

    Chris Yarran

Re: Why has everybody got Yarran sliding? I work down at Essendon and can confirm if he is there at 5, Yarran will be a Don. Regardless if Rich slips. Only Hill they rate higher (Watts and Natanui excluded) You live in Croydon and work at Windy Hill? Ok

    Casey Sibasado

You must not have seen the day he kicked 5 in the rain and had several tackles/smothers. His work rate that day was very impressive and had a lot of people talking. Considering he came into an established side and played Full-forward, its a pretty impressive effort.
