The Age Footy Legend no 7: Gary Ablett Snr

He was co-Captain in 1995 and we made the Grand final. Very different job requirement then of course but it's not like when he did it we plummetted.

Opinion Have the MCC and the AFL ruined the MCG?

And over 110,000 regularly (119K+ in 1969, 118K+ in 1971 etc.). I believe it was 1970 when all four finals drew over 100,000 fans.

The Age Footy Legend no 7: Gary Ablett Snr

I think it's a different eras thing. Ablett junior benefited enormously from vastly more professional training, club culture, coaching, everything. Ablett senior didn't have any of that, he was still driving trucks for Ron Hovey as late as 1989. Mild peeve of mine (not directed at you), I still...

The Age Footy Legend no 7: Gary Ablett Snr

True. But it's also got very little to do with football. If the "character" qualification was really to be followed - half the players listed in the hall of fame would be ineligible immediately. Leigh Matthews for starters would be removed instantly (you can't have a hall of famer who was a...

The Age Footy Legend no 7: Gary Ablett Snr

For most of his career, Pendlebury hasn't even been the best player at Collingwood. Ludicrous comparison.

The Age Footy Legend no 7: Gary Ablett Snr

Not so sure. I'll freely admit Ablett junior's absolute peak years were probably at Gold Coast. If not for injury he was sailing away with a 3rd Brownlow medal as well. So I don't just consider his Geelong years - and for me he was our best player by a mile from 2007-2010. Even among midfielders...

The Age Footy Legend no 7: Gary Ablett Snr

Totally disagree with that. His football intelligence was as good as anyone who has ever played the game. Pendlebury isn't within a million miles of Ablett senior in any capacity.

I'm going with another 6 in the same bracket, so I'll go along the lines of: Bunton Coleman Whitten Skilton Matthews Carey I'd have Farmer, Reynolds, Baldock, and Lockett extremely close as well. For more recent players Ablett junior and Williams are the pick to me.

The Matthews / Bruns incident. What was it that caused the aftermath ?

Have never seen the first two, so here goes: 1. Absolutely nothing in it. Ablett is falling over and their legs get tangled. The Sydney player is also holding his ankle, not his knee. 2. Clumsy at best. Ablett tried to bump him, missed and fell over his legs. There's no remonstration from any...

The Matthews / Bruns incident. What was it that caused the aftermath ?

Yeah what I've been told about that was two players running into each other (without seeing the other coming) and knocking themselves out. It was nowhere near any kind of king hit.

The Matthews / Bruns incident. What was it that caused the aftermath ?

I can't recall anything like that. Who was the Sydney player who did his knee?

The Matthews / Bruns incident. What was it that caused the aftermath ?

Yeah if you ever want evidence of the hypocrisy of the footy media, the way they suck up to Matthews has to be right up there. They're only too happy to draw and quarter modern players for sneezing on opponents during a game but they won't dare criticise him.

The Matthews / Bruns incident. What was it that caused the aftermath ?

Also have to remember shepherding off the ball (within 5 metres) was a lot more common then. As was colliding with defenders dropping into the hole. Mitchell White was another one who got cleaned up by Ablett leading out and not stopping.

The Matthews / Bruns incident. What was it that caused the aftermath ?

That's the key word though. He was definitely physical. I'm not sure he was a thug at all. The one thing Ablett didn't like or tolerate - and I met players who told me this - was being scragged off the ball. That's what Lyon was doing. You can almost see the footage (he's just out of screen)...

The Matthews / Bruns incident. What was it that caused the aftermath ?

Total nonsense. The two occasions Ablett ran through Gastev were exactly the same - he was leading out for the ball, Gastev dropped into the hole, and like most forwards then - he kept running and collected him. Pretty much like he did with Dipper in the 1989 Grand final (to absolutely zero...

Podcast Joe Rogan - Tricked again!

Same here. Most of his comedy buddies I've got very little interest in hearing from. That's a big portion of the show right there. But depending on the guest, wait and see. Some good, some great, some indifferent. Imagine that.

USA Trump Bibles and trainers, what products should other Presidents have endorsed?

Great thread. A few off the top of my head: George Washington - false teeth Andrew Jackson - canes Abraham Lincoln - wrestling tights Ulysses S. Grant - cigars Teddy Roosevelt - spectacles, teddy bears, judo mats

USA Kamala Harris Concedes. God Help America

Both sides had celebrities, but from the outside (I didn't count) it seems like there were way, way more on the Democrat side. The other thing is a good chunk of the Democrat side would have been from or near Hollywood, and that area (and profession) doesn't seem to resonate with the bulk of the...

    Hidden 60’s and 70’s Gems

I love that photo. Clearly during the Exile on Main Street recordings. Love how Hopkins is sitting on a normal chair with a cushion to prop him up. Who needs piano stools!

Not like the coverage would get any worse. He'd be a better commentator than Russell without even speaking.

Pt2: Adrian Dodoro: Football’s Biggest Fraud IMO

Because if any one of them dared criticise him, or even ask questions, they may not keep their gold class access, and get to pretend they're mates with the players and coach and ex-players and so on. That's way more important to the footy media than actually doing their job.

Play Nice 47th President of the United States: Donald Trump - Part 20: If you want Capitalism, you got it

Neither a Trump apologist nor a Republican nor a Democrat nor an American (loved living there though). I get to watch their elections with amused detachment. The point was - why did the majority vote for him. I gave what I think are reasons. Rightly or wrongly it seems that's the way they went.

Play Nice 47th President of the United States: Donald Trump - Part 20: If you want Capitalism, you got it

Being racist means genuinely believing one race is inferior to others. I don't believe that for a minute - not about any other current politician either. On either side. Saying the odd stupid thing without thinking, no doubt at all.

Play Nice 47th President of the United States: Donald Trump - Part 20: If you want Capitalism, you got it

To me Trump is a part of it but far from all of it. It's partly the economic situation, partly the feeling the Democrats have not only abandoned the working class, but now openly despise them (I think this one is a large factor), partly their relentless identity politics, and to a degree the...

Should be done regardless. Not saying they have to do it every year - we're only going to get 8-9 games, but all clubs should get their turn. Not just the bottom 4 clubs and interstate teams.

Take your hand off my kids ipads

I see side by side examples of the same age kids going to our school and another one close by with shall we say, more lenient philosophies. The differences in respect, behaviour, and manners is stark to put it mildly. I read it described well, think of a device (plus social media) as experience...
