Play Nice 2024 AFL and State League Attendance

Can't be doing that when the grand final is locked into the MCG. Teams need to play there, even low drawing ones.

Would that MCG crowd have been, what, 40% Swans fans?

Would get the same for our own team rather than part time visitors of course. No footy to go to now until August now, that hurts.

Would be difficult also given Croatia are probably the biggest club in the city, but they also kinda have the fascism problem a lot of high profile Croatian clubs do

    2023 Crowds and TV/Streaming

Guess it depends whether you prefer to look at a few hundred people more in percentage terms, or as a quantity. Must admit I was looking at it as more of the latter.

    2023 Crowds and TV/Streaming

GWS barely getting a bump vs Blacktown with that Henson Park crowd. I'm not sure where else they could possibly play ohter than their main stadium at the Showground, but they probably need to be playing further west than Henson if it's not boosting their numbers much.

    2023 Crowds and TV/Streaming

I think it's a combo of: Having a lot of women fans just to begin with. It's old data but according to 2010 ABS spectator attendance survey, 47% of attendees at Australian Football in NSW were women vs 42% in the footy states. Not a massive difference but it's something. The club promoting...

    Expansion Canberra

The Raiders do like to complain about this, but it ignores that the biggest piece of government support they get is concessional land arrangements that they have been able to turn into their own money making assets. They'd definitely be making more than 2m a year off the real estate portfolio...

    Canberra's own AFL team

Even this sorta understates it. The Capital Region of NSW, ie people within an hour or two drive of here and economically linked to Canberra, has another roughly 200k, on top of the 430k in the city itself. If we're going to call Tasmania a single market despite the distances involved, it's...

    Canberra's own AFL team

There's 430 thousand people in the ACT, upwards of 650 thousand within a couple of hours' drive. There's 226 parliamentarians and maybe a couple thousand staff and a few dozen journos who FIFO for sitting weeks. They're a mostly invisible tiny group unless you're in one or two suburbs or trying...

2020 AFL Crowds & Ratings Thread

Odd drop off from last week given it was a derby, might have been because there was 24k at the NRL All Stars match across town, and possibly an entry fee due to the men's preseason game afterwards?

That Gold Coast crowd is the biggest northern states AFLW crowd except for the grand final at the same ground in 2017

Contact sports like AFL could cease to exist in one generation

At the very least they should be looking at restricting heading to the penalty area, that might eliminate some of the hardest head impacts.

Yeah it thinned out dramatically as the game got non competitive. Snow was over by then anyway!

2019 AFL Crowds & Ratings Thread

Was pretty similar to most Canberra crowds, mostly locals some of whom were supporting the visitors, a lot of neutrals, good but not overwhelming support for the Giants. I reckon a third of us were there for the prospect of snow, judging by the crowd reaction when it started.

Carlton declares $2.6m profit despite poor on field year

Bear in mind a big chunk of Carlton's depreciating capital is going to be tied up in their social clubs, rather than being just the footy related Princes Park stuff. I'm inclined to think it's not an exceptional set of circumstances but bog standard business expense.

Carlton declares $2.6m profit despite poor on field year

Quite so, that's what I was getting at, along with the related point that clubs are small/medium businesses, not big ones, with little capacity for things like capital investment. Plus financial equalisation is extensive enough in the last cople of years that if a club expands or contracts its...

Carlton declares $2.6m profit despite poor on field year

Usually this is true, and you're correct to point it out, but it can also be misleading as well because of the asset life assumptions being key to apportioning the expenses When St Kilda decided to move from their recently completed grant-funded facility at Seaford to an even newer grant-funded...

    Expansion 3rd Western Australian club

Self-compiled. The original data on places of origin was mostly from Fanfooty, but then with research correcting the state of origin of some guys as mentioned (eg Ben Brown is not really from Werribee). The figures in the first post are as given here and then the second post I took the "games...

    Expansion 3rd Western Australian club

From, I think, the 2017 lists, Victorians had played an average of 62 games, Tasmanians 63, South Australians 66, and Western Australians 71. The other states and territories were all a fair bit lower (NSW 55, NT 50, Qld 49, ACT 44). That's pretty crude, but it sorta suggests there's a few more...

    Expansion 3rd Western Australian club

Both South Australia and Western Australia already produce more players per available list spot than Victoria does. Last year it was about 100 SA players and about 116 WA players in the league, or about 50 players per club in that state, 15% and 13% of the league for 11% of the league's clubs...

Moved Thread AFL tips $25m into the Suns for 2017!!!

Yup, I mean the Saints and Lions both got almost $21m too this year. The Dogs got just under $17m, the Eagles and Hawks got under $11m. There's a greater degree of fiscal equalisation than there used to be, which is an explicit AFL policy, and that's a good thing for small clubs being able to...

2018 Club Membership (2018 AFL Audit numbers now in OP]

I think the strongest counterargument to this is Sydney having the highest sponsorship income. Those hundreds of thousands of barely-engaged eyeballs obviously matter to some extent. The Crows would get plenty of value out of those free memberships. Getting thousands of names, an address and...

Play Nice Richmond, set to become the biggest club in Australia, now with 100K members

It's uh, it's actually probably West Coast. Their actual net football revenue (the revenue from membership, gate, sponsorship, corporate hospitality, merchandise, minus the costs of getting that revenue) even with a stadium capacity constraint, is well ahead of anyone else.

How long before GWS becomes the most hated team in the competition?

Yeah but the alternative is a club that I dislike and which is supported by terrible winners, could win. If my team can't win I'd rather someone like that not win. It's like when the Storm win or one of the Kiwi Super Rugby teams win - nobody supports them and they're inoffensive enough so it...
