Last week: 2 high profile cases.
MRP rather glibly states to show duty of care of care, the tackler neds to release an arm so the ball carrier can brace to protect their head.

If that’s the case, this should be no issue, right?

Except the arm free thing is BS. Caldwell’s arm was never doing a damned thing to stop that, and if he was turned further left to where he could attempt to, he would have most likely wrecked his shoulder as well.

Caldwell collapsed, Keays just went with him. It wasn't like Keays had his full body weight on him and us forcibly driving him into the ground.

It looked like the first attempted tackle threw Caldwell off balance and caused him to stumble and collapse, after that Keays was just along for the ride

Caldwell's head accelerated towards the ground well into the tackle. I dont know if he was throwing himself forward to get a free, or something else caused it, but it certainly didnt look like Keays' tackle was the reason.

I wonder if the AFL will have learned that sometimes accidents happen from actions that are not inherently dangerous.

You can tackle a player tearing their ACL causing them to miss a year of football. Noone does it deliberably (you'd hope) and noone has ever been penalised for it. Why are clearly accidental head injuries more of a worry? Careers have ended because of injuries to other parts of the body.

There was a FAR more dangerous tackle by an Essendon player early where the Crows player was slung and his head hit the ground first. Umpire called HTB and the commentators made no mention of it. Because luckily the Crows player was okay.

But the action itself was inherently far more dangerous. And we have seen far more head injuries from those types of tackles which is why they have been banned for years and years.

The 2 incidents everyone is talking about I don't see as a major issue. Caddy was going for the ball, kicked the ball and Dawson was bumped legally into a vulnerable position by another player.

Keays is falling with prior momentum, not both arms pinned and a bracing arm hits the ground before the head and there was no concussion.

The only incident from last night that is worth a trip to the MRO is the sling tackle delivered to Berry where his head does hit the ground. Particularly poor look for the AFL when it was given HTB by the umpire and described as a 'perfect tackle' in commentary. But that's what happens when the AFL has two competing agendas...clearly the plan to get Essendon the win was more important than player safety

Not sure how much more "care" Keays could have taken other than not tackling in the first place. Should not have a case to answer, but this is the AFL who just make it up as they go along.

MRO may be learning. Sometimes accidental injuries happen, and they need to focus on the inherently dangerous ones.
the only thing they seemed to have learned is if they want a player to get off then fck up the wording of the charge so they can get off on a loophole.
