personally I think for too long our team has lacked characters who are hard nuts, a little bit of c#nt in them and plenty of heart, besides Junior who we retired too early. Our list is full of weak outside players and downhill skiers who only play well when the team is playing well and only start playing well once the team has established a lead. We need to draft and trade for players who are going to give it 110% every week and drag the other players along with them. Unfortunately we have no clear captain who can lead from the front, we have to go hard in the offseason and try to acquire someone who could come straight in and captain the side (like judd at carlton but clearly there are no other judd's flying around).

I hope who ever coaches next it ruthless and tries to breed a tough culture into this club which is clearly suffering from a poor culture. Although I love him to bits I think Sylvia needs to be traded while he still has value, as much I love him he is a perfect example of what is wrong at our club. As one of our best players he always goes missing when we are loosing and crying out for someone to stand up, and he only ever dominates against teams like richmond in the second half once the team is playing well. Along with Slyvia we need to try and trade Morton and have a serious think about Dunn, Bate, Spencer, Strauss, Bennell, Jetta and Newton. The new coach has to make some tough calls but I think we need to look to trade in 2 experienced players from other clubs, the best available talent in the draft and then some mature boides from the VFL. It's time this team Harden's The F#ck Up, I'm sick of watching us win one week and everyone play out of their skins and the next week get flogged by 10 goal and no one looks like they give a sh#t.

So whilst trading and delisting a number of senior players may cause us to take one step back next, I believe it is cruical if we are ever going to hold up the cup on the last saturday of September

It's all right to say let's recruit experienced players but no one wants to come to us. What we need to do is recruit properly and get the best recruiter available with a proven track record.

Prentendergast was never the right man for the job just like Bailey. If our new coach doesn't come in with a recruiter he can trust then he is not the right man for the job.

You are already writting the recruiter off after 3 years?

How do you know that the players that BP has recruited won't show their worth with a new coach?

FWIW 2008 could go either way. The only real query is on Strauss. Watts is coming along nicely and it's not the recruiters fault that Blease snapped his leg. The rest were late speculative picks anyway.
2009 looks like they nailed the draft (Scully, Trengove, Gysberts, Tapscott, Gawn)
2010 has shown good signs early.

What has h done wrong?

Agree. Do these early draft picks ring a bell.
2002 Bell, Nick Smith - both gone
2003 Sylvia- never reached potential, McLean- gone
2004 Bate, Dunn - treading water
2005 Jones- just o/k could have got Birchall, Hurn or Higgins , Buckley - playing with premiers
2006 Frawley, Pettard - good selections
2007 Grimes - good, Maric - will be gone
2008 - Watts - good, Blease?, Strauss, Bennell - both soft and struggling

Of the 16 mentioned only 6 would be consided good selections. Just think if 2 or 3 more had become good or elite players. The recruiting of good early picks between 2002 and 2008 has had barely a 40% success rate. It is NOT good.

It has not changed in 40 years. Good players make good coaches. Our list relies heavily on late and rookie picks which should not be the case.

Recruiting is everything, don't burying your head in the sand and say we have recruited well. If we had, we would be on top of the ladder considering the number of early picks we have had compared to other teams above us.

Yes! We can't afford another Cameron.

What did he do wrong? Lucas Cook and Strauss. You should be asking yourself what has he done right?

Seriously LS - that's absolute lunacy to suggest that a 19 yr old KPF who hasnt played a game yet is a mistake. How can you possibly justify that?

Lucas Cook is in his first season and hasn't played a game, yet you are writting him off.

You have no clue, so if you don't mind please go outside and play and leave the grown ups to talk

Ah did you read the OP?
I'm going to assume you didn't because otherwise you are a dead set moron. Has Prentergast been in charge of recruiting since 2002? No
This discussion was about BP, who has only drafted players since the 2008 draft. Anything earlier is irrelevant to this thread.

FFS Strauss isn't soft.

Sure he isn't a Bartram or a Macdonald, you don't need a team of those types of players.

In fact it is incredibly rare that a team of hard nuts will win you a flag simply because they do not have the skillset to beat good teams consistently.

We need a balance. We need inside hard nuts, classy outside types, all round midfielders.

Young teams are rarely 'hard'. It doesn't take all players the click of a finger to come in, play well and play hard, committed footy.

Listen thickhead this thread is not about Prendergast its about "The Uncle" making comments about mediocrity and delisting or trading players such as Sylvia, Morton, Bate, Dunn etc. Taking one step back so that
Predergast can take two steps forward with good future picks.

It just so happens that you cannot ignore the past because the players recruited before Prendergast should be our current senior playing group. His thread is as much about the past as the present and future.

In regard to 2010 who would you rather have Lucas Cook on our list playing VFL reserves or Jack Darling with nearly 20 AFL games already at the same age.
As I said recruiting is everything. You obviously think Strauss, Bennell and Jetta are great picks. I don't when you consider Hannebury, Trengove, Zaharakis, Ballantyne, Suban, Redden, McKernan, Mitch Robinson. Liam Anthony, Rockliff went to other clubs.

It is whyen you bypass Darling and Smith.

This isn't about him not getting a senior game, plenty of kids don't play games in their first year, but not many are getting dropped to the VFL reserves because of poor form. That usually happens to the Weetra's not your first rnd pick.

Mate, you need to take a step back and realise that your opinions, although contentious, are not the problem.

It is the way you go about interacting with other users that people dislike. You are rude, arrogant and antagonistic. If you showed a little curtosy to your 'fellow' Dees fans it would go a long way.

This is my last post on this. I'll be the mature one and step back as these have nothing to do with footy, but here is a tip:

You cop abuse because you come across as an arrogant, childish twat who thinks his shit don't stink. You can have all the opinions you want, that's what the forum is for, but if you just delivered them with some form of humility and without all the bravado and "me against the world" bullshit people might respect what you have to say more. People simply laugh off your posts when you crap on about how right you are and you're the only constructive one here and blah blah blah. We don't give a shit what you think about yourself. Maybe if you contributed properly you wouldn't have people either ignoring you or simply brushing off what you have to say. I'm sure that somewhere in there you have some good stuff to say - just don't be a **** head in getting it out there.

Done.

This. Learn your lesson, sting. Play nice, and you'll make some friends here and earn some respect when your brilliant predictions come true.

Edit: vale Sting, your red card was long overdue. Unfortunate, because there was possibly a good footy brain hiding underneath the shouting and bravado.

It's a shame really as I agree with you in some ways - I think underneath it all he had something to offer. We tried, he failed. That's life.

csnt understand why so many people jump on Strauss

he has showed plenty since coming into the team

I think he has the tools to become an elite running defender, which is all the more reason to hire best and most successful coach availabole who has a track record of developing talented kids into stars.

I agree TMS, and to be honest many on here do also.

It's only a handful that refuse to acknowledge the improvement Strauss has shown this year; but due to those voices being very repetitive I think it seems like there are more Strauss-knockers than there really are.

struass hears footsteps, his hearts smaller than Mortons, he's got limited courage, and that will be proven in the next 2yrs.

Hope whomever has bagged Strauss out has this injury on their conscience. Talented young kid who just goes hard, quite unfortunate. Will be missed.

Ha! Like you can talk about being in front of a keyboard, all you do is tear down everyone associated with the Melbourne Football Club. And to make matters worse, your grammar, spelling and punctuation is abysmal.

crawl back down your rabbit hole, do you think i was happy because he broke his leg, i luv th meldourne fetty clab, hows my grammar there silverspoon.

STFU jtr, Strauss isn't soft.

There was no softness on display today before his injury and after breaking two bones in his leg he barely let go of a whimper.

Not an overly tough player, but tough enough.

His first couple of games have stuck in the memory of a few.
