Mark Baguley - #46

Height:180cm
Weight: 83kg

  • Pick #47, 2011 Rookie Draft, from Frankston (VFL)
Taking the approach from Phone (thanks bud),

Really excited about this 180cm, 83kg half back flanker. Have seen 'Bags' a few times in recent seasons, having played at my local VFL club, Frankston Dolphins for the past 4 years.

At 24, time was ticking away, having attracted some interest from Collingwood and Geelong in recent years, Baguley knew this was one of his last chances.

He was able to transform himself from bit parts forward to dashing small defender. His competitive determination to win at any costs really stood out for me this year. He was able to repel attack after attack and was the Dolphins 'go to' man in the back half.

Ball use was always a standout, having been a smooth mover, his goal kicking was always superb, reminding me a little of Jason Akermanis with his dead - eye - dick ability in front of the sticks. To transfer his skills into defence was awesome, his weighting of passes, his ability to kick a ball into space (for teammates) another feature.

Great pick up, with his versatility to play small in defence or go through the midfield, whilst I have mentioned his ability to play forward a big boost. Can see him as insurance for guys like Dempsey, Hibberd and cover for the younger brigaide as reasons for his recruitment. I don't care.

I would like to welcome Mark Baguley from the Frankston Dolphins F.C to the great Essendon Football Club. (Can see him in the No. 1 jumper, but won't happen)

Re: Mark Baguley

Mark Baguley - running half back / half forward with good skills. Plays tough and works hard and will not take a backward step. A bit hard to get a serious read for me as it is hard to judge how well some are going in a poor side like Frankston. has played 50 plus VFL games.
Has had some big possession games off half back and has been used as the outlet guy a lot. Did keep Dickson to 1 goal against Bendigo early in the year and was Frankstons best that day.
Very much like Hibberd in a lot of ways.

Was holding off for ahwile because I wasn't able to find much (like most of the rest: But I have got:

Goosey highlighted defender Mark Baguley as an AFL prospect after a 31-possession best-afield display.

Baguley also collected 14 marks and even kicked two goals. The 24-year-old is hot on Collingwood's radar and recently met Pies officials.

"He’s strengths are exactly like Hibbo (Essendon’s Michael Hibberd), he’s just such a competitor. You throw the ball there and you don’t want to get tackled by him,'' Goosey said.

HFF:

Mark Baguley, 178cm, 82kg, 21/5/1987, Utility

After playing predominantly forward for the first few years of his VFL life, Baguley has found his niche playing as a sweeping defender cum on baller and doing a very good job of it. A neat silky left footer, he just has that class about him that makes you stand up and take note.

Re: Mark Baguley

NEW Essendon midfielder Mark Baguley believes it’s not anymore difficult to get noticed at Frankston than other competing VFL clubs even though it is a renowned cellar-dwellar.

The Dolphins have only won a handful of games over the past two years but are believed to be well on their to success in 2012.
“I don’t think it’s tougher,” Baguley told Football Nation.

“I think it’s a matter of being good enough. They’ve got a pretty good record of getting blokes drafted.”

“They’ve had one for the last three years I think,” he said.
Baguley, who joined ex-Frankston team-mate Michael Hibberd at the Bombers in last week’s rookie draft, said is confident of making a statement early and playing some senior matches in 2012.
“I’d like to think so,” he said.
“It’s just a matter of getting there and doing the training and trying to get in where ever you can,” he said.

Baguley believes he had a far better season this year than last season when he was spruiked by coach Simon Goosey as a possible draft target.
“I didn’t think I’d get drafted last year but I was a bit more confident this year,” he said.

He said that Essendon had spoken to him throughout the season and in the week leading up to the draft but hadn't trained there. Shane Valenti was on the radar at the Bombers also.
“I thought I was a 50-50 chance but when I got picked up, of course I was excited,” he said.
“I hadn’t trained there but I spoke to them during the season and during the week.”

Re: Mark Baguley

We have a lot of players similar to Baguley and Hibberd now, will be a wonderful recruit for Bendigo in the meantime while he waits for his AFL debut!!

Best back pocket... What sort of a question is that?

He's cut from a very similar cloth to Hibbo in terms of where he's come from.

Was a genuine fringe player in the worst VFL side for the last 20 years.

Has more strings to his bow than Hibbo but what Hibbo does, i'd argue he does better than Baggers. I don't expect Baggers to play any more than 4 or 5 senior games. I reckon if he does then he's done a fantastic job.
