AFL Player #16: Archie Perkins - Re-signed for two more years - 3/6

Have a look at this. It's brave when an interstate team benefits from it apparently:

Speaking exclusively to AFL.com.au, Wingard said he didn't slip under their radar, he just didn't want to be part of what they were building.

He said he had no option but to be totally up front with then senior assistant coach Mark Williams and coach Kevin Sheedy when the pair interviewed him ahead of the draft.

In what was a brave, considerate and mature move, he made it clear to the Giants they'd regret drafting him.

"I was pretty honest in how I was feeling," Wingard said.

"They're trying to build a team from nothing and if I lied to them and said 'yeah I want to be here and I'm going to be here for your future', they're putting all their chips on me [only] to find I want to go home in two years.

"They're pretty much going to lose me for nothing.

"So I think that because I was so honest, they still got to pick someone else who wanted to be there and they didn't get nothing for their pick three, four or five which was what they would have had [me at]."

I was getting greedy when Hollands got as close as he did but it was always Perkins that struck me as the guy who would be available and we just had to take.

Don't really care about the flashy stuff, I just want to bank a 188cm midfielder with elite running power, who can play inside and out. Hopefully the flashy stuff is what turns him into a really special player.

Its weird, people laugh and poke fun at all the psych stuff that clubs and recruiters do and them trying to find out whether they have "it" yet when a player says he doesn't want to go interstate publicly everyone sits around and plays armchair psychologist.

Footy really has changed.....Imagine Archie playing with us in the 80’s.

Wonder what TD, Merv, Harvs, Roger et al would have made of his straw boater? Merv may have killed him.

They’d have to catch him first :p What they might’ve called a larrikin.

He seems like the type that will knuckle down and earn the respect on the field anyway, even if he isn’t their cup of tea off field.

What would the AFL prefer, players say nothing and guys like Hately and Caldwell just walk after couple of years?
The other question is....did the club ask a questions that led to that response? If so, you cant expect the bloke to lie. Don't ask the question if you don't want to know the answer

I guess the line is saying you don't want to move interstate as opposed to saying you wont move interstate. The former is perfectly reasonable if you are asked the question, the latter probably starts to veer into tampering.

Robert Shaw like him - good enough for me.

He said he felt he wasn't ready to move interstate.

I'm not sure he would have given a flying **** what they thought of him :) Which I kind of like.

People complaining about his wanting to stay in Victoria sound like they have never been to a job interview.
The only thing I’d say to that is, is if you put your name down for the draft you’re accepting that you will be available to play for any of the 18 clubs.

If a job ad said good chance you would be working interstate then you wouldn’t apply if you didn’t want to go

What was the video?

Video deleted. What did I miss?

First half was Gil about to read out Archie's name (Essendon selects...), followed by a cut to Archie, shirtless, doing a shot and calling himself the loosest campaigner in Portsea (and seemingly not holding the shot down).

Yep, coz there’s plenty of other elite comps a footballer can work in......
