AFL Player #16: Archie Perkins - Re-signed for two more years - 3/6

May have been a pre season game but he looked like he had no idea what he was doing.
So far he has shown some good half forward form but zero midfield skill .
It's a new role, it's not like he's Setterfield who's switching to an old role that suits him.
Shit takes time!

s**t takes time!
Hence the doubt? I'm thinking there is more than a 50% chance he starts the year in the 2s, especially if we actually want to develop him as a mid.

Have to have some sort of basic ability to do it. It is not a role you just learn at a higher level having limited exposure to it as a junior. Even more so at AFL level. He will be Langford version 2.0 if it keeps going the way it is. They have a kid who has the genuine scope to be a 50 goal medium forward. His current skill set fits half forward / wing perfectly. It may even work at half back. I have watched him play a little under 18 , pretty much all of his VFL and AFL live. He just hasn't got the natural instinct for midfield. If he is going to pick something he is likely going to have to do it playing VFL all season.
Right now it looks like another classic Essednon hammering a square peg into a round hole.
Let him play half forward and he will be a star by the end of 2024. Keep him running around in circles trying to play midfield and he will be another Langford / McGrath.

Will be interesting to see how much patience Scott has for the experiment. He has said numerous times he prefers to play players in their natural positions. With Setterfield onboard Perkins may be better value as a floating forward/winger.

There seems to be a trend where we take these sort of kids, trial them to cover our needs, then park them on a flank when that doesn't work
Sort of like square peg doesnt fit in round hole, but kinda goes in that hexagon one if you spin it round.

I think he has a skills set that can work in the middle. He's strong, stands up in a tackle and keeps his arms up so he can get a ball out without just panic flicking it.
Add to that he's a decent mark and field kick too....goalkicking is the stuff of modern day brownlow medallists. Which is a reason why im less enamoured about him as a forward

Question is the core midfield set of skills - 360 degree awareness, defensive pressure, positioning, decision making and finding the ball.

We need him to be a mid. Whether he can be i think becomes apparent in '23.

Most players have a skill set that will work as a midfielder in some form. The reality is midfielders have a natural instinct for what you call the core set of skills. It is not something you teach and I say that not as an opinion but based on over 10 years of watching junior footballers come through to the top level and as 10 years working as a development coach with Div 1 footballers as well as playing midfield myself during my country footy days.
He will be what he will be but right now every time I have seen him play midfield he has had limited impact and it just looks very plain. I will take star forward any day of the week. There are not a lot of medium forwards who have his sort of X factor .

INSIDE MIDFIELDER, MEDIUM FORWARD

#45

Archie Perkins

Height: 186cm
Weight: 77kg
D.O.B: 26-03-2002
Leagues: NAB League Boys

POSITION: Inside Midfielder/Forward
DRAFT ANALYSIS: "Perkins is an impactful midfielder/forward with explosive athletic traits across the board, the ability to kick goals, and enormous upside overall." - Michael Alvaro
Upside is somewhat of a buzz word within the AFL Draft realm, and Archie Perkins is a prospect who has it in spades. The Sandringham Dragons product is a true modern day midfielder who boasts elite athleticism and measures up at a promising size, making him one of the more desirable prospective picks among this year's first round. Having mostly rotated through the engine room from half-forward or the wing as a bottom-ager, Perkins was aiming to start at the centre bounces and rest forward as a top-ager. With the APS football and NAB League seasons cancelled, he did not get to truly show that kind of development, though his previous on-field feats and testing data make for an exciting combination. Perkins' promise has seen him earn selection in the Vic Metro Under Under 17 side, as well as in the Futures All-Star showcase on AFL Grand Final day last year. He remains a top 15 chance, and one who could really lift off at the elite level.
STRENGTHS:
  • Athleticism
  • Explosiveness/power
  • Overhead marking
  • Scoreboard impact
  • Attacking instinct
  • Upside
IMPROVEMENTS:
  • Finishing consistency
  • Midfield accumulation

Seems like he was mostly a flanker.

Yeah, that instinct isn't there.

If its going to be x factor forward, then we should really be building on that and working on both his goal kicking but also his impact on games. He goes awol too long as a HF.

Id take him reaching peak stringer level and staying there :p

The AFL podcast interview that Scott did with Twomey the other day included comments on Perkins;

"Jye Caldwell has been really impressive, Will Setterfield has impressed everyone with everything he's done, Archie Perkins is coming through, Kyle Langford plays everywhere on the ground but has certainly spent some time as an inside midfielder for us. There are a lot of options there which I think put us in a good spot," he said.

Archie Perkins as a midfield point of difference: "He is. But again he kicks goals too, he's shown that early in his career as well that he can do that. He's a strong powerful forward and he's been impressive in the contest. I probably thought we've got some really, really capable midfielders but Archie's a bit different. He's obviously got great attributes but he's just that strong midfielder who complements what we've already got."

Twomey wrote it all up and it got published as the longest ever article in the history of the Essendon Football Club website. These quotes are right down the end:

How do you know that?

Far from convinced he’s a mid. But if he can kick 40 a year as a dynamic forward - that’s fine. Nothing wrong with that.

Has that ability to stand in tackles, absorb pressure and dish off which makes you think he has midfield traits…but he just doesn’t win enough footy.

People underestimate the value of pure forwards. If he fulfils his potential there it’s a million miles from a water pick.

Well he did miss his whole draft year where he would’ve been played as a full time mid at sandy.

I have noticed a very dumb tendency across the AFL to look at a very good forward or defender and question "yes he's good, but can he do it through the midfield?" like you're not really any good or fully contributing unless you can play in the middle. You see it in a lot of draft profiles too "can he take a step up and add a midfield string to his bow?" etc. Who cares, just let them be a good forward or defender.

i think for us, the issue is so many end up there

It's the classic Dodoro snipe - drafts a flanger to play inside mid.

First up - i wanted Perkins. He and Cox looked the best 2 picks we could take at that point.
BUT
If Perkins isn't a mid, then we needed to draft one with 10, or let the better talent (Tsatas) slide this year and go the greater need (McKenzie/Clarke)

Personally, i think he has some really attributes that will set him up as a point of difference mid.
But to Ant's point, he really needs to show he can adapt to the core capabilities of an AFL midfielder.

Brownlow the same. When was the last time a forward/defender got close?

It is like the umps just look at supercoach scores to vote.

Perkins played one year of junior footy forward. One. He's a mid.
We will see .
He actually played multiple positions at East Sandy as a junior. But what would I know.

he has some attributes of a good midfielder. but he's going to need to get more than 15 touches again.
doing well in traffic and under pressure is great. but you have to also find space and and get some easy touches too.

i'm not ruling that out, but i haven't seen it from him yet. i think he should be persisted with in the midfield rotation, as this is a development year for us anyway. we're not a finals team this year, so who cares if it costs us.
