No Langford in your best 22?

Controversial call mate!
He will be picked but I have been watching why we leak so much footy as a bit of a focus of mine and his reaction time to transition into defensive mode is slow. Add that to his average speed and he becomes one spot that we can not contain. I think we can only have one of Stringer or him forward and long term we have better wing options IMO 🙂

I’m not at the point of dropping him personally, but I think these are the sorts of decisions we need to make. We have to start playing a best 22, not our 22 best players. If a big name misses out…..so be it.

Funny thing about Langford…..he does generally look very one paced….but every now and then he puts the foot down and you think “where did that come from.” I suspect a laconic mindset is part of the issue.

Me 3

Don't see him as that guy. Nor a winger, not really. Looks like a high half forward.
Yep, exactly. I don't get the fetishisation of the midfield role.

Langford is not in my team and Tsatas is not a winger. That leaves Martin , Durham and Perkins to control the wing :)

We both know Tsatas isn't an inside mid, he'll be nominally selected there and end up like the rest of our 'inside mids'. Hasn't been playing hard football for what's going to be nearly 2 years by the time he gets back. That champs final is likely the player he's going to be. Running and marking. Nothing wrong with being the player he is, but he'll be fulfilling the utility of a winger even if we don't play him there.

Did you not watch his games for oakleigh early last year?

I know his weak points but clearance was not one and with a few more in on the frame he will be fine as a clearance player. My knock on him was total lack of defence and not physical in other parts of the game like the tackles and putting any body pressure on outside his clearance work which was fine. He is not wing .

I saw them, I just do not rate that Shiel type of clearance because while it looks good on the fly, if you aren't a scrapper and a defensive worker you lose out on the aggregate.

I don't doubt he'll get clearances. But I'm not interested in his 5 clearances a game if it means we give up 5 the other way. The net gain is zero. The side is better off with a player who gets one clearance and gives up zero.

would just like to see him get more of the footy becuase he’s so damaging with it. Playing half forward in the first couple of seasons of your career is rough because you have someone hanging off your every possession. So whether that’s some more wing or midfield it’s a win win.

I was almost as critical as you after watching some of his games this year but after speaking to some contacts who are still in the recruiting world I have a bit more confidence he will be able to make a fair bit of headway in his weaker areas .
Anyway this is more about my rating of Perkins midfield ability which I would say is a long way behind Tsatis in most areas and his defensive actions have a way to go as well.

As for Perkins, He likes contact, can stand up in the tackle, he's good at keeping his hands free. If he can learn to read it better I think his natural attributes are more akin to being a net gain player than practically anyone on the list outside of Hobbs. Certainly far from the finished product but happy to invest.

I also don't rate him forward as much as most around here. He's not exceptional aerially or crumbing it at ground level, so I doubt he'll become a 40+ goal player up forward. Also makes it kinda weird draft choice as a forward, as Henry is the more likely dominant force.

Good news guys, we know Archie, Zach and Cox are going to be guns now!
IF, and that's a large if, the 3 early picks don't pan out it will set us back a long way.

It was the draft to launch the rebuild on.
After 2019 & digging on Daniher, we really need that draft to bring in at least 2 elite talents.

Who from the 2020 draft has really starred yet? Its too early to call what the good and bad picks of that draft were because it was the first covid impacted draft.
Rather than us making the wrong calls with the picks, I think its bad luck that we finally decided to do a rebuild and let Joe go in the first covid year. In hindsight shouldve let him and fanta go in 2019.

For reference:

Pretty much no one has done anything of note, that cohort lost their entire U18 year so would have been coming from further back than usual. General rule of thumb is the 3rd season is when players start to emerge so I'd think some of these guys should be holding down regular Best-22 slots this season.

I still think they are 3 elite talents.

None were very plug and play, safe choices. Swinging for the fences for game changers.

So far we have two coltish talls taking time to get their body right and a big utility who already shows some x-factor and power. I'm not worried yet.

On this, is it fair to rank and 2022 with 2019 and all the back to 1986 and 1981/82 and treat 2020 and 2021 as separate cases because of the shutdown?

His X factor is his ability to break free through traffic and his marking ability. That has wing written all over it.
To be honest, I think I would prefer someone of that description playing the 'Dusty' role we have been trying to get Stringer fit enough to play (starting at centre bounce and streaming forward).

I think 2020 / 2021 will definitely be a lot more uncertain, a lot of guys missed a year (or two) of consistent football so it was a lot more speculative as to who was the top talent, and likely it'll take them an extra 6 - 12 months to perform at AFL level at a guess.

Probably more similar to drafting in the 00s where it was way more speculative than it is today.

So would I but unless you show some ability to win a centre clearance and read the tap work it is not going to happen. He has not shown much of that ability so far and it is a skill set that you can only learn so much as a lot has to do with natural instinct , reflex and hand eye coordination.

They were relatively sharp talents, but at the time there was top 5 that appeared fairly clear cut, and we fell just short of that, getting the sharp end of the next rung down.

Not worried yet, but this should be the year for them. Injury really hasn't helped.

really cooked this draft all picks where duds
Not sure what's stranger, how early that call is or that you think we maybe should've picked someone else in hindsight? Cox, Perkins, Reid was the obvious three choices at the time and still is now.
