AFL Player #16: Archie Perkins - Re-signed for two more years - 3/6

Not sure what's stranger, how early that call is or that you think we maybe should've picked someone else in hindsight? Cox, Perkins, Reid was the obvious three choices at the time and still is now.
id argue Reid was less obvious at the time.
Perkins and Cox picked themselves unless Hollands slipped back.

With 2x NGA KPD kids also in the draft, and Cox being a KPP himself, there is/was an argument for taking a mid - O'Driscoll for example.

Reid was the only one of the three considered to get picked before us (GC and Hawthorne were considering him). He was the most obvious of the three.

So would I but unless you show some ability to win a centre clearance and read the tap work it is not going to happen. He has not shown much of that ability so far and it is a skill set that you can only learn so much as a lot has to do with natural instinct , reflex and hand eye coordination.
In fairness he hasn't really been afforded the centre bounce opportunities in his first two years to show his wares there.

Scott is talking up for more midfield time, so maybe we will see some signs.

In my experience of watching midfielders come through they show a natural ability to do it whenever they go into the middle.
I know it is not a popular opinion but 11 years of watching TAC / NAB it is what I tend to look for rather than the obvious stuff.
I think he has the X factor to be a super star half forward/ wing . He has a rare ability to move through traffic and get out the other side and his vision as far as ball use is high class .
His clearance work can improve but I have doubts on him being anything more than an average clearance player.

Who from the 2020 draft has really starred yet? Its too early to call what the good and bad picks of that draft were because it was the first covid impacted draft.
Rather than us making the wrong calls with the picks, I think its bad luck that we finally decided to do a rebuild and let Joe go in the first covid year. In hindsight shouldve let him and fanta go in 2019.
The only two that I'd call as game influencing are Errol Goulden and Max Holmes. And there was that one game from Ugle-Hagan

Doesn’t always get it right but he’s a bigger midfielder who can take a grab and wear contact and things generally happen when he has the footy.

The regret is that we don’t have 4 more of him.

For different reasons a lot of the first round haven’t had a chance to break out yet. Gulden, holmes, chapman, berry and ginnivan have already arrived within 2 years. Id expect to see a lot from Phillips, Holland’s, campbell, henry, Bruhn, juh and wouldn’t be surprised if most of them have break out years in 2023.

Hollands and Phillips have had injury issues
Bruhn had the logjam at GWS and seems like he'll explode at Geelong
Jamarra is a tall, so expect him to take a bit, but i feel he broke out late last year.

Ive mentioned earlier, this is a big year for Archie. Really needs to find his feet and his spot.
Same goes for Cox. Ideally he settles into the backline and builds towards an intercept/rebound weapon. Him being confident on both sides coming out of defence will be handy.

Reid, well....let's just get him on the park

I don't see the issue with Archie being Archie.

He's been solid enough playing a very difficult role at half forward.

He's got some top end physical tricks, both his explosiveness and his endurance.

I can't say I've seen anything from anyone else that leads me to think we took a guy who was not worthy.

The issue, as I see it, is that he looks a long way from being a box to box midfielder (a term I'm going to use for what I want).

At this stage of his career I don't see him as adding much to the midfield. I'd much rather see him stay at half forward where he has the tricks be a game breaker. Get him up to the stoppages and use his running power to work back to goal.

Become a gun and then maybe look at stoppages full time.

I don't think he should take a second of game time on ball from Caldwell or Hobbs this year.

This is a good point. He's still my pick in that draft.

Yeh that’s what I was talking about Phillips and hollands had hardly played but look in great nick, Bruhn and henry impressed but lacked opportunities at their former clubs.

Well said.

I can imagine if we had traded Daniher in 2019, and the Papley deal went through, we might've got #5 & #9 in a draft that we were empty handed in due to the Shiel deal, which means we could have had Young and Serong.

But no one could have predicted COVID. Jury's still out and it'll take a little extra time for these guys to gel, especially since we tend to forget that their 2nd year was riddled with turmoil and instability.

New coach, new captain that can actually earn a spot in the best 22, stability + Hobbs and Tsatas coming in, more games into Jones. Reckon we just gotta be more patient than usual when you look at it from a bigger perspective.

But we need a damn solution to these injuries.

5 and 9 weren't on the table. It would have been 9 and F1. But don't let facts get in the way of the story.

THIS could be Archie's break out game. A lot of people shat on him for an average pre-season too.

He did suck when playing on ball pre round 1.

He was very good playing forward today.

I'm not usually one for resisting position change when it benefits the team but here I just want Perkins to settle in this half forward role.

He can find the midfield game play from half forward, if that's where we want this to end. I just want to see him really break out before we start moving him around.

He did suck, but pre-season just gets you conditioned for the real games, so I didn't worry too much.

I agree with the rest of what you said.
