AFL Player #16: Archie Perkins - Re-signed for two more years - 3/6

I always thought his waist was too skinny in his first two years but he’s filled out a bit and perhaps his improved strength is enabling him to play more roles like he did last night. The coach believes he’s only going to get stronger, which if is the case is really encouraging.

Has an ablett like shimmy that loosens the tackle and he can stand up and get the ball away

One of the reasons i like him as a potential mid is that strong, tall playmaker type.
Was a really good game from his last night

Love that he played mid and did a job last night. Very encouraging.

Half forward is a hard place to consistently find the footy, we have judged his progress harshly at times (me included).

Did well to follow Crips and play tight to limit his clearance but he still shows limited ability to read a clearance. For all his time in the middle next to Crips he had 1 clearance. There where a few times where he was in prime position to get the footy but he did not read it. For mine Martin actually shows a massive amount more as far as potential clearance winner.
I like Archie but I am seeing a very limited midfielder and a very good half forward / wing who is a good secondary receiver and has some moves and pretty good vision when he has the footy.

So a strong bodied version of Mark Mercuri? I'll take it!

Watched the replay and kept an eye on him, bloody hell he's a strong boy. So steady and assured throughout the hips, really composed performance.

Cripps has been off the boil for a while but has the horrible habit of ruining us, and he just didn't get the chance on Sunday.

Adding a tagging string to his bow is a huge attribute for the future

Brad referred to Archie as a "beast".

Not much beast last night. I rated him in the draft but I have some concerns about what we are doing with him. It looks like Langford 2.0 in the fact we are trying to turn a medium forward into a midfielder. We need to stop stuffing around with him . Get him back to the VFL if need be and let him play in his lane as a medium forward with some X factor . If we do not then we will be wasting our time.

Waiting for him to tear a game apart or a quarter. If we play two rucks plus wright, weideman, Langford and stringer up fwd, balance seemed be a bit off and may need his role to be taken by a small pressure fwd.

Doesn't really deserve to be dropped but also wouldn't be against him dominating VFL for a few weeks and coming back in full of confidence and mojo. Similar to Hobbs earlier in the year.

I'd drop weideman first though.

Not sure where the hysterics are coming from that he played midfield last night?

He played 90% of the game forward
100% of the first 3 quarters forward

And when we were getting pumped in stoppages and the game was over went into 3 CBAs
It is not hysterics about last night .
It is the big picture. Despite the numbers on match day he is still training with the forwards and the midfielders during the week so you are taking away part of his natural game to work on something else rather than honing the craft he has . We are doing to him exactly the same thing we did with Langford.
This has nothing to do with how many minutes he is playing midfield at AFL level and everything to do with not working enough on what is actually his one wood. It leads to a lot of inconsistent performances as there is confusion in the roles.
For us it is a repeat cycle.
I think he needs to play VFL as a half forward and get some form back.

Then whys it coming up after the game?

Then whys it coming up after the game?
I have been saying it for a long time. It is not just something I have said after any particular game. I was saying it last year and pre season this year and during the season this year. It is not something that is just coming up after the game.
