AFL Player #16: Archie Perkins - Re-signed for two more years - 3/6

Only 3 goals in the last 11 games after 15 in the first 12.

He was tracking to give 20+ disposals and a goal a game a shake as a 21 year old and we decided to use him as a meat shield in the middle in the back half of the year.

I don’t want to hear about Dodoro in this thread, he picked a gamebreaker here and this is a Brad Scott hatchet job.

He was plugging holes in the midfield.

Never want to see him in there again. Langford 2!

I suspect right now he is happy doing enough which can happen with the young blokes.

Unless you’re innately a type to push harder regardless of the environment I’d say that attitude of being happy enough to be there is pretty easy to adopt at EFC at the moment.

There’s not a Selwood or Hodge type bullying the players in to playing at a higher level so they all kind of settle in to running around at 95%.

This thread is a funny read from beginning of August to now. Archie goes from "most likely to break out, needs a big preseason" to "spud, needs a big preseason".

We need to leave him as a forward/mid, not the other way round. I have no issue with Scott giving him more midfield minutes as we needed to see what he's got, but his value to the side was and has always been forward.

I think he’s been tracking ok with an across the board increase each season, continuing that growth will come with physical maturity but also finding another gear mentally (he’s not alone there).

He’s got the raw physical tools to be a good AFL player undoubtedly.

I’m not against him learning run with ropes, might’ve opened his eyes how the best players work. Though, I would t want him doing it all next year

I wonder if Archie is a young bloke who is just happy to be playing AFL footy and does not have the edge that takes him to the next level. Can not question that he has ability and can do some X factor stuff but he goes missing for long periods. He has real concentration issues and does not transition into other phases of the game well at all. Is not a clearance player. He fumbles and his read is not at the speed. Has shown some ability to run with a player but even in that role he can have issues with staying in the play and showing the required concentration and second and third effort. He is a decent size and can use his strength to hold a player out but he is not a physical player and does not love the contest. Goes when it is his turn but does not go out of his way to ruffle any feathers .
In an interview earlier this year (perhaps before his 50th?), he mentioned that he does what he has to do (paraphrasing). Not all the extras. Doesn’t sound like a 24/7 AFL player.

Necessity and a bit of "see what the lad can do"

We lack contested marking and its something perk is good at it.
I think HF who roles through the middle when required is fine. But you cant play him and stringer in the same side, and we need more pace and pressure.

I think we probably went too far the other way, but I guess at least we’re fully aware of what he can and can’t do for now.

Would have really hurt his confidence though, I would have thought, he was flying.

Sounds about right and it lines up with his performance.
Really needs to get his head around the fact that talent alone is not enough.

Considering how shocking his tank was when he arrived I say he’s been quietly improving. Won’t be an A grade star but he will be a solid player for us.

Doesn’t have the tank yet for midfield, he’s mainly a forward, but having players of his calibre who can throw minutes in are valuable. The only knack is the lack of defensive pressure atm.

If Scott isn't just talk then I suspect a few players are going to get a pretty rude shock over the next year or so.

I mentioned earlier he’s one I’d look to trade.

Agree. From what a few are saying those shocks will start in the exit interviews over the next few days.

Around the time of the 2020 draft I thought Perkins , Henry and Ford were all closely ranked similar types as mid sized forwards. Perkins was ranked the highest but the other 2 had strengths he didn’t possess. Perkins has played the most games and came onto the scene straight away but is coming to a cross roads of will he take the next step. Henry has a had a great year kicking over 40 and has probably gone past him - and Ford a slow start to his career but has had a great 2nd half of the year and is close to going past him aswell.

Be interesting to see where all 3 are in 24 months time.

Seeing some chatter on other media that Archie is talking to a few other clubs. Anyone ITK able to confirm?
trade thread has some posts wrt to archie & geelong

Can't figure out for the life of me why this would be a thing, unless he ran over Brad's dog.
He must have done so after Baldwin did so.

Reckon some Cats fan has just made it up
Not necessarily, we had a poster from another club drop into our trade thread claiming that Perkins was having a club meeting with Geelong

We all dismissed it as bullshit …however some Insta stalking from a few posters found that he was now following the cats and several players …still who really knows
