Yeah I'm worried about him. His kicking is fine and he uses his size well enough in contests, but he just doesn't get enough of the ball and doesn't have enough impact. He needs to find a way to be more involved in the game and it's just not happening.

It's funny because he is almost exactly the opposite of Tsatas.

Tsatas is a bad kick and lacks the strength to stand up in contests, but he has no issue finding the ball and getting involved.
Perkins is a good kick and has the strength to stand up in contests, but he doesn't find the ball or get involved much.
Splice the DNA

Feel like he started his career well because he had a mature body. His ceiling doesn’t seem too much higher to me but he could have that sort of Langford trajectory where at a certain point he’s not just a strong kid, he’s a truly mature beast and he finds another level.

Personally I would be setting him tackling KPIs if I was coaching him as I reckon it would be the best way to get him into the game, and would benefit us the most given he is really a half forward or bust at present.

For what it is worth and it is captain obvious but he has to start having more impact on games. I have not been a fan of his clearance work and I do not think he will ever be good in that area but I have liked some of the match sim where he has blocked in the CB and used his size. If we can use him to do that and then play a half forward / wing role we can work with that.
Right now he seems to be having a few issues with the transition from offence to defense in his game and working on it is effecting his offensive output. I think he is a naturally gifted player but maybe not the smartest so the transition is not natural.
He is one bloke that can be slow to react to an opponent going the other way as a half forward and he does run himself into the ground a bit because he is playing catch up a lot of the time. Similar to Cox on the wing.
I do wonder if we slot him on the wing then maybe we do see the best of him as he seems the type that could be okay with just working up and down one side and linking in.

Absolutely, though he needs to grab his chances at the same time. He is in danger of being overtaken/overlooked.
With poor performances like that, ooft.

The Hawthorn game last year had a lot of us thinking a break out year was on its way, only for it to be a false dawn. Chalk and cheese.

Hope he does some soul searching over the next fortnight because his best could break games open.

Does anyone watch him closely? Is it a work rate issue ? or he just runs to the wrong spots?

I think it is a confusion issue. Trying to work in the defensive requirements with the attacking part and then throw in learning midfield on the run.

Why would we waste time developing somebody when we can play them out of position?
Played most of his juniors in the midfield.

Why play someone exclusively in the seniors to the detriment to their development?

Actually not quite true. Can not find the article (may be posted earlier here) but he played a few spots for Sandy East including CHF from memory. His bottom age year for the Dragons was half forward.

Him and Stringer can't play together in the same forward fifty. They are vying for the same role as the mid sized high half forward who pushes up to the midfield.

I am still bullish he will look better when not competing for marking lanes with Stringer.

I feel like the most ideal scenario is to see him develop into that De Goey mould, but for that to happen he needs to toughen up more, put on more size and be more confident in his kicking. Even then De Goey didn't break out until his 4th year (the same height/weight as Perkins now) and was not instrumental to a flag until his 9th season at the club.

Good marking with size too.
Perhaps the overlap hf/wing with duursma.
