How many he kick r1 , don’t think he’s overrated just not sure who you think your comparing him too ,,,, he’s a small forward , they’re. Hot and cold that’s par for the course with these roles . Who you comparing him to that plays well every week and is in brownlow contention
Sound ridiculous it’s because it is
Hot and cold is generous for him, he is too often invisible.

A 15 disposal average and 25 goal season would be a start, with less games where he's just a non factor.

I just feel like he escapes a lot of critique because of his name and ability to do the great every now and then. It's time for him to do more in 2020.

I would too however too many compare small forwards to say Dangerfield or Ablett career numbers as a reference point rather than say Eddie Betts or Cyril Rioli who both avg 13-14p over course of career

Averages per game out of interest.

Eddie Betts - 12.3 disposals, 1.9 goals, 3.1 tackles

Cyril Rioli - 15.1 disposals, 1.5 goals, 4.5 tackles

Daniel Rioli - 11.5 disposals, 0.9 goals, 3.2 tackles

Please, don't compare Dan to Eddie, Betts is arguably one of the best small forwards of all time with 3x AA and 600 goals. Cyril isn't as good, but is still lightyears ahead of Daniel.

I agree. The averages I quoted show just how far away Daniel is from the players he should strive to be. He’s a stay at home small forward who can’t even kick one goal a game.

Sorry, thought it was an argument the other way that he's close to that level.

I reckon he would have to be one of the most protected on these boards and close to the most overrated. Does sweet fu** all in nearly all his matches other than chasing.

Is anyone else thinking it's time for him to start delivering beyond his good game every six weeks or occasional crumbing goal?
he had a bad game,he wasnt on his own

Everyone gets his role. Everyone. But does Daniel want to be a role player or a great player? That’s the issue. He’s got far too much talent for the player he currently is.

Remember how bad the forward pocket / forward pressure, situation was, before we drafted rioli?

Take ya foot out of your mouth , what it saying is if the best in the biz carved a career on back of 11p a game , Rioli isn’t as far off as most think . His finals resume tells me he can play

I am leaning toward agreeing with the criticism. He gives forward pressure, yes, but lets remember. He's a forward, his main job should still be to crumb and kick goals.

He might be a role player, but we have too many "role players" imo (which has improved a lot since we drafted guys like Stack and Bolton), we need Dan to become more. I am sure he will though, he is only 23. We've had a lot of players who tend to be lateish bloomers.

He kicks almost half as many goals as Betts/Cyril and has less disposals.

He’s had 2 goalless Prelims as well don’t forget.

He can play but he’s not much more than a role player who occasionally bobs up with a couple goals. He needs to be better than that.

Just turned 23. Got a pretty high ceiling

Our forward pressure was ordinary on Thursday night .Probably because our best small forward has been playing on the wing .

I have him rated behind
George
Bolton
Higgo at his best
For a fourth best small he performs his role well and I mean very well and has punched above his weight in finals performances . If you think he should be challenging Dustin Martin as our best player , you need to watch more football
Name another sides 4th best small that goes better than him ,
Our side can improve , I have the blow torch on Stacky , jack g and even marls, one will be dropped

It’s not his main job though, his main job is apply pressure first because he’s insanely good at it. Watching him run up, back, across and all over the place is seriously one of the most jaw dropping things I’ve ever seen in footy particularly when he has to hit the accelerator. It’s massive for us and the goals are just icing, he could easily be a 35-40 goal a year small forward but would have to change the way he plays.
Stuff that we need the Rioli we have now more than the latter.

Thank you. I agree 100% with this, and I’m saying it shouldn’t be this way. This is my exact criticism of Daniel. He’s a fine 4th best small forward but he should be our best or 2nd best at absolute worst with the talent he has. (I’m a massive Bolton fan, and think he is our best small and have the best career.)

Your 4th best anything is a role player, and he needs to wake up before he finishes his career as a role player. Which would be disappointing from an individual stand point for him.

Castagna is about as good as he can be, I’ve fully accepted him for what he is, he’s frustrating, but he doesn’t have the talent Rioli has so I’m don’t expect more from him.
