Sylvia is a hard one to judge as he had a lot of good athletic qualities but he was a pretty dumb footballer. I don't think Trengove would have won a brownlow but I think injuries robbed him of a career probably a bit better than what Jones had for us.

Give Sylvia a work ethic and he could have been anything. Never got the most out of himself, was too content with getting by on talent.

He like Jurrah could bust a game open on their lonesome, never saw that type of thing from Trenners.

People compare him to Daniel coz his ball use and size. Don't read into the like for like too much. As far as I know Daniel cant jump on anyones head either.

What you just said is like comparing Andrew Walker to Simon Black. just because a player can jump doesn't mean they should be spoken about in the same sentence as one of the games greats. And Daniel is one of the best players in the comp so respect should be given to him.

Woooossshhh....I was actually using Bowey's ability to jump as a reason not to compare him to Daniel.

I think it's unfair on trengove when people say we stuffed up on picking up Scully and trengove over Dusty. People forget Trengove was a very good player the reason his career didn't pan out was not because he was a dud but he was decimated by injury. Scully on the other hand was a bust.

Sylvia was ok, but he was no Addam Maric

It's revisionism.

Scully and trengove were the top 2 picks. I can't recall ever seeing any media say different.

It's funny, the narrative for about 2 years in Adelaide was how Adelaide messed up taking Dangerfield at 10 instead of ebert.

Its always interesting to see media comment on grading players post draft night. They don't really come back and visit their own analysis too often though.

Wasn't butcher considered as a number 1 pick as well at some point?

It sucks. If you ignore athletic traits Trenners did everything perfect you could teach a young footballer. From his tackling to the way he approached contests etc. He was the perfect footballer technically. So so sad
100% looked like a Jimmy Bartel clone

Probably unlucky not to win our b&f in his second season

Looked a natural footballer who could play anywhere on the ground, unfortunately he was never fast a losing a little leg speed just stuffed him at AFL level. But despite that he would have the footy brain/ability to still tear the state league apart

Yeah early on in 2009 it was Scully 1 & Butcher 2

Butcher was the worst set shot I have ever seen. Basically kicked a helicopter punt every time. Took him a few years to break into Ports team and then in his second game kicked 6 from 6 kicks and then 4 or 5 in his next game and the AFL world was all over him.

I don't think he even got to 30 games before he was delisted and never seen again

Yes his kicking suits his name. It felt like he was a good player that just couldn't get a good run at it because of injury but in reality he was never good and just faded into obscurity.

Best debut since Oliver I reckon. I love him already.

Trengove showed all the signs of being a jet just through hard work, good skills and being a super smart footballer. Great at sneaking forward and a good overhead mark.

For those who don't remember him well, a good game to rewatch would be us vs Lions in R4 2011. It was only about his 20th odd game and he was excellent.

I remembered the same game. He was terrific

Even Grimes. The way he read the play and his positioning at half back was incredible for a young bloke. We f’ed both of their careers.
Brock McLean and Yze worth a mention.

I saw Trenners as more like Bartel. Didn’t have the ridiculous power or eye-catching highlights like Voss or Riccutio etc

On iPhone using BigFooty.com mobile app

Fair enough I wasn't saying he was exactly like Riccuito more that he was gonna be that figure hear mid for his club like Buckley, Voss, Roo, Hayes etc.

I also just feel like sometimes Roo gets left out of the best mids discussion and that guy was a ****ing beast.

People went a little far with my analogy, don't think Trenners was ever going to be out best ever or anything that's why I said ignore athletic traits because you need a mix of both. As a direct comparison to Bowey though purely on footy IQ from day dot.
