Yes he was done, but that's not the point I'm making.
He was a flog, but an imposing one. He was a big reason we won games - psych.

Sure, but you know what's more imposing a batsman that stays in and you can't get out. Amla from SA at his peak was like that, and he could bat time.

It's only a fair side that's all it's been, we have one A+ grade bowler in Cummins, one A grader in Haze, neither are near Bumrah but they are good fast bowlers. Batting has been a problem for a decade and until we get more that are test specialists it will continue. If iI hear about strike rates and what not I'll puke, give me 5 bats plus Head, Head being the aggressive one. The other 5 are normal test bats that know how to bat time. We have zero of them, what I'd give to have a Pujara type in this batting side

We all know saying his name makes you physically ill but there’s a third fast bowler who’s strike rate has been 47 over the last four years. Writing him off as though he hasn’t even been there is foolish.

You have to take 20 wickets, if our batsman had form you shouldn't be relying on Marsh at 6 as a lock. India do it well all the time essentially playing 5 bats and having Jadeja or Ashwin , an all rounder and the pace attack.

This is where Greens bowling was handy but in a 5 test series sometimes you need help.

India have just demolished us with a makeshift opener in KL who was going to be batting at 6 at best, a number 3 and 6 that looked all at sea.

Watching Marnus and Marsh throw down some of the slowest pies at International level ever seen only highlights the need for us to have a 4th seam option even more.

We are not going in with Carey batting at 6 when we already can't score enough runs, that would be suicide against the best bowling unit in world cricket in India.

We need to score runs, the change should be Inglis for either Marsh or Lab, will they do it I doubt it

Starc has been decent but is he more than a third wheel B to B+ bowler? I'd actually have Lyon our next best actually, Starc is the cherry on top bowler, and you cop the rubbish he can serve up. Personally the other two are another level above.

Yes, as someone with the strike rate that he boasts, he’s hovered around B+/A for much of that time. And I say that reluctantly as someone who wrote him off for much of his career. The guy takes wickets.

He does but bowls absolute trash half the time, B to B+ is fair though give you that. Lyon a solid B+ spinner. The attack as a whole is top quality there's just no Bumrah quality in there and that's fine.

I wouldn't call us just fair when we had one of the best fast bowling attack, best spinner, top 2 batsmen and Warner in the top 5. It was a good to very good Test side but not great.

It didn't make any difference how many runs he scored, or how on field imposing he was to opposition teams. Most people wanted him out for most of his career simply because they didn't like him.
Now they get their wish, and can watch a 70kg soaking wet opener give the opposition bowlers an extra pep in their step.
i think most people wanted him gone because he continued playing for entirely selfish reasons & because his form was essentially non-existent for a fair number of years

Very good is pushing it, as a ranking its probably a 6.5/10 (maybe 7 on a best case) side and that's fine actually, we were saved by Smith being Bradman like at his peak. The South Africa side before the current drop was better when they had Steyn, Philander, Morkel, etc. Batsmen in AB, Amla, Smith.

I'd give my left nut to have had batsmen post the same averages as Smith, Lab, Warner, Khawaja, Head for England, not to mention the 21st century GOAT Adam Voges

Most bowlers with an incredibly high strike rate do bowl a lot of trash.

That’s what comes with throwing the ball up

Bowlers like Bumrah are a rarity who have a low strike rate and are also hard to hit

Steve Waugh too was identified and backed in by selectors as a young bloke and had a pretty poor start to his test career
It wasn't as poor as legend would have it, but it did take a very long time for him to get the first ton.

He contributed well with the ball in his early days and also in ODIs.

That is fair 100% there, can't rate him more than a B though he makes me pull my hair out!

I blame CA and George Bailey/ Ronnie McDonald specially for our present predicament by playing favorites and letting Warner stay past his used by date. They set a precedent doing that and now we are stuck with a fast ageing team that look as tho the modern game has passed them by. The BBCI saw the writing on the wall and jettisoned some former greats past their best to send us arguably their least experienced batting lineup in ages. With only Kohli from the old guard here as the team mentor.
Reckon the selectors use this as an excuse "there is no one performing in the shield atm so we can't make changes"

its a smokescreen excuse ...they should be doing there bloody job

I'll just take batsmen that value their wicket, do these blokes realise they don't need to play golf on day 5? It's a 5 day test for goodness sakes
